Luncheon Nov. 16 to fete award recipients
The awards will be presented during the National Philanthropy Day program.
LIBERTY -- Eight recipients will be honored during a National Philanthropy Day program planned Nov. 16 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals Mahoning/Shenango Chapter.
The event will take place at the Holiday Inn MetroPlex Centre. Registration and reception will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a luncheon at noon. Presentation of awards will follow.
The 2004 award recipients are:
UHelen Stambaugh, Outstanding Philanthropist Award. A former executive director at Park Vista Retirement Community and Shepherd of the Valley, she keeps the vision of philanthropy of her late husband, Arnold D. Stambaugh, alive through generous charitable foundations that benefit the community.
UC. Gilbert "Gibby" James, Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award. He serves on six foundations and on numerous nonprofit boards, including 35 years on the board at the Butler Institute of American Art and the Canfield Fair Board.
UAqua Ohio, Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist Award. Headquartered in Boardman, the investor-owned utility has an exemplary record of civic responsibility, supporting many area programs and both local and national charities.
UBerner International, Outstanding Small Company Philanthropist Award. The firm is lead by Georgia Berner, who is dedicated to the support of various charitable organizations and community programs, specifically those focused on the betterment of people, their lives and the communities in which they live.
URachel Hawkins, Outstanding Youth Philanthropist Award. Diagnosed with a rare liver disease, Rachel wished for and was granted a trip to Hawaii with her family. In return, she was instrumental in organizing the Hawkins Family Walk Team, which raised over $20,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, enough to grant wishes for five local children.
U Welcome Wagon of Canfield, Outstanding Civic Organization Award. In operation since 1963, the organization provides an immediate opportunity for newcomers to become acquainted with others. It also undertakes charitable and humanitarian projects such as Meals on Wheels and provides financial support to organizations that aid the needy or handicapped.
UJunior Group of Goodwill, Outstanding Civic Organization Award. The group is dedicated to acquiring funds for Goodwill through such projects as the Antique and Collectible Auction, which raised over $60,000 in the past two years, with profits providing job training and employment services for those with disabilities and other barriers to employment.
UJack and Dolly Andrews, Legacy Award. The area has benefited immensely from the Andrews Trust, which will enrich many lives for years to come. Beneficiaries include the American Heart Association and a great number of Youngstown area community-oriented, charitable and civic organizations.
