Cowboys fall short on New York journey



Southington rallied to defeat Sts. John & amp; Paul in an ESC game.
ATHOL SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Lamar Sykes gained 49 yards on 17 carries and scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, but the Chaney High football team was beaten by Buffalo St. Francis 28-7 Saturday.
The Cowboys (5-4) rushed for 75 yards on 23 attempts and were 9 of 17 passing for 130, with quarterback Rick Hlinka connecting on 8 of 16 for 101. Kory Jackson caught six passes for 77 yards.
Zak Kedron rushed for 199 yards on 23 carries, which included TD runs of 61 and 19 yards, for the Red Raiders (6-2).
He also caught a 20-yard TD pass from quarterback Ilio DiPaolo, who also tallied on a 1-yard run and made place kicks for four extra points.
The Red Raiders rushed for 362 yards on 47 tries and were 7 of 11 passing for 61.

SOUTHINGTON -- Trailing 18-7 at halftime, Southington scored four straight times en route to an East Suburban Conference victory.
Zack Stalnaker had four of Southington's six touchdowns in the romp, which lifted the Wildcats to 4-5, 3-3.
After intermission, Stalnaker scored from 4 yards out with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter to pull Southington within 18-13.
Then the senior tailback's 15-yard scamper with 3:44 to go in the third quarter put the Wildcats on top, 19-18.
Justin Kren's 24-yard touchdown run and Eric Dunlap's PAT pushed Southington's lead to 26-18 with 1:23 left in the period.
Again from 15 yards out, Stalnaker tallied with 10:46 remaining in the game to widen the gap to 32-18.
Sts. John & amp; Paul came back within 32-26 when Gino Sasano scored on a 20-yard pass from Jeff Tokarczyk, followed by Tokarczyk's conversion pass to Joe Massucci. Jim Bauger's 33-yard pass to J.P. Barco finalized the score.
Of Southington's 297 total yards, 212 came on the ground on 46 plays. Bauger completed eight of 17 passes for 85 yards. Stalnaker carried the ball 31 times for 151 yards.
SJP had 214 total yards with Tokarzyk completing six of 27 for 124 yards. His six completions were to Sasano. The Heralds' 31 rushing plays netted 90 yards.

TOLEDO -- Youngstown Christian fell behind 28-0 in the first quarter and couldn't make up the difference.
Aaron Tate returned an 80-yard kickoff for a touchdown in the second quarter as the Eagles (0-7) trailed 41-6 at intermission.
The Eagles scored three times in the fourth quarter as freshman Randy Triplett tallied on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and Daryl Jullierat tallied on runs of 20 and 7 yards.
Sal Mineo made place kicks on three of four attempts.
Jullierat, a senior, carried eight times for 30 yards. Triplett connected on 11 of 17 passes for 135 yards.
Junior Jared VanArsdale caught seven passes for 75 yards.
