Biopic about bad director released on DVD for real
The Feb. 3 release included a feature on cross-dressers.

"Ed Wood" finally has arrived on DVD. Really. No joke this time.
After many delays, including two instances when finished DVDs actually got into the hands of consumers after they supposedly had been canceled, Tim Burton's 1994 biopic about the worst director in Hollywood history is out in a feature-packed special edition (Buena Vista, $29.99).
Johnny Depp stars as the master of camp, who had a fondness for wearing women's clothes, especially pink angora sweaters, and made wretched films on pea-sized budgets.
Those who nabbed the DVD after its previous release (and cancellation) date, Feb. 3 -- when copies were selling on eBay for $45 to $65 -- have one extra that is unavailable on the new version. A featurette on cross-dressers was removed at Burton's request.
Of course, as Depp's Wood says in the film, "Filmmaking is not about the tiny details. It's about the big picture."
The expurgated DVD still makes a dandy special edition without the tangential supplement. The enhanced widescreen disc contains an ensemble commentary that includes Burton and Oscar winner Martin Landau, several making-of featurettes, deleted scenes and a music video.
For those dreaming of big bucks on eBay with the old recalled DVD, you might as well just keep it. There appear to be few takers for a version with an inconsequential bit about transvestites -- and certainly not at the previous lofty prices. Then again, perhaps you could attract interest by selling it with a pink angora sweater.
