Ursuline rolls past JFK, 5-3



Badger and Champion both scored shutout victories.
WARREN -- Ryan Novotny had a hat trick as the Ursuline High boys soccer team defeated Warren John F. Kennedy 5-3, Thursday in the Division III tournament.
After an 0-4-2 start to the season, the Irish (9-6-2) have won nine of their last 11 games.
Vlad Lungu and Nick Chaney each had one goal for the Irish.
Kyle Schimley had two scores and an assist and Brian Cullivan had a goal to give the third-seeded Eagles (7-7-3) a 3-2 lead at the break.
Badger 8, Columbiana 0
KINSMAN -- Ethan Hall, a sophomore, scored three goals for the Braves (16-1) who won a sectional title.
Brad Panak and Anthony Mancini each added two goals. Rich Duffy also scored a goal.
Mancini also had two assists. Joe Meloni, Tyler McNelly, Panak and Duffy had an assist apiece.
Badger had 27 shots on goal and Columbiana had four.
Josh Gilliland of Badger had four saves. Ryan Guy of Columbiana had 16 saves.
Badger, the second seed, will play at Ursuline Monday at 7 p.m.
Champion 9, Mathews 0
CHAMPION -- John Emery, senior forward, scored seven goals, giving him 54 for the season, as Champion blanked Mathews for a Div. III sectional title.
Chris Palm and Ryan Canatsey each added a goal for Champion (13-0-4).
Palm had three assists on Emery's goals, while Tyler Lemon had one and Max Brugler two.
Brett Ford of Mathews had 37 saves.
The Golden Flashes will play host to Bristol in a district semifinal Monday at 7 p.m.
Waterloo 1, United 0
ATWATER -- Waterloo's Jordan Hamrick broke a scoreless tie with 1:48 remaining, on a corner kick from Ben Adelman.
Spencer Widlicka had 16 saves for United (6-7-4).
Jason Jenior had two saves for Waterloo (10-5-2), the fourth seed.
Division I
BOARDMAN -- Senior Jeremy Winters collected a goal and two assists as Boardman defeated Uniontown Lake, 5-1.
The fourth-seeded Spartans also got goals from seniors Nick Ludban and Enrique Urrutia and junior Sam Stoll and freshman Sam Ragan.
TJ Hosa, Dan Shobel and Jordan Winters had assists and goalie Frank Dravecky had six saves.
In other games, North Canton Hoover blanked Canton McKinley 7-0, Kent Roosevelt took a 3-2 decision from Austintown Fitch and Green eliminated GlenOak 1-0.
Howland 3, Salem 1
HOWLAND -- Mike Maiorano scored two goals for the Tigers in a regular season game.
Mark Blose scored Howland's (11-5-1, 7-2-1 Metro Athletic Conference) other goal, while Sean Gerin had two assists and Ian Jones had one. Zack Roscoe made eight saves for the Tigers.
Salem's (11-5-1, 6-3-1) goal was scored by Dominic Gilbey. Ryan Yeager made seven saves.
