WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Drivers using Pa. Route 60 can expect short delays Saturday and Sunday as new overhead signs are placed along the road near the Interstate 80 and Pa. Routes 18 and 318 intersections between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Traffic delays shouldn't last more than 15 minutes, according to the department of transportation.
Leaf pickups planned
LEETONIA -- The street department will begin picking up leaves Nov. 1 starting on the north side of the village. Workers will pick up loose or bagged leaves. Leaves mixed with brush will not be picked up and will have to be disposed of by the property owner. Brush will be picked up later.
Deliveryman attacked
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a pizza deliveryman was attacked and robbed in the 700 block of Spruce Avenue. The address turned out to be a vacant house but the deliveryman, a 28-year-old Sharon man, didn't know that when he arrived about 8:10 p.m. Thursday, police said, adding that as he approached the house, a man told him to enter. The deliveryman said he was attacked inside by two men, one of whom hit him in the arm with a skateboard while the other hit him over the head with a bottle. The deliveryman broke away, ran to his car and drove away.
Costume contest, parade
SALEM -- The Salem Community Center will have its first costume contest and parade from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30. There will be 14 categories for infants to children age 9 and over. Only one category may be entered per costume. Refreshments will be served. Call (330) 332-5885 for more information.
Fund drive progress
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The United Way of Lawrence County has met about 28 percent of its campaign goal this year. Volunteers had their first report meeting Thursday at Tuscany Square Ristorante. The goal for 2004 is $630,000. Two special events make up a good portion of the money raised. A golf outing raised $18,000 and "A Taste of the Town," a food event that featured 16 restaurants, raised $5,500. The campaign has raised a total of $175,000 to date. The next report meeting is Nov. 3 at the New Castle Community Y.
School funding forum
COLUMBIANA -- William Phillis, executive director for the Coalition for Equity and Adequacy, will speak at a forum on school funding at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the high school. Other speakers include Ron Iarussi, school superintendent; James Hall, South Range school superintendent; and Charles Swindler, Western Reserve superintendent.
FBLA Veterans Day
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Area veterans are invited to attend the sixth annual Mohawk Future Business Leaders of America Veterans Day program from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Mohawk Junior-Senior High School auditorium. Speakers include Lt. Michael W. Trahan, senior political and military adviser to assistant secretary of state, and Lt. Col. Grey Berrier. Mohawk's band and chorus will provide entertainment. New Honda City robbed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An undisclosed amount of money was taken from New Honda City on State Street. Pennsylvania State Police said someone pried open a side door and ransacked several offices and opened a vending machine sometime overnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
Passenger dies in wreck
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said an Elmo Avenue man died when the car in which he was a passenger slammed into a tree on the Sharon County Club golf course about 2:25 a.m. today. Ryan Redmond, 22, was a passenger in a car driven by Mark J. Snyder, 22, of Basil Drive. Redmond was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Charles Zeigler, Mercer County deputy coroner. Snyder was taken to Sharon Regional Health System and then transferred to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. His condition wasn't available early today. Police said Snyder was eastbound on Thornton Avenue approaching Forker Boulevard when he failed to negotiate a curve. His car traveled 250 feet onto the first fairway of the country club course before hitting a large pine tree, police said. Both men were wearing seat belts, police said. Only the passenger-side airbag deployed, police said.
