As if a homemade pie wasn't precious enough, here's Pfaltzgraff's 9-inch stoneware pie plate with matching pie bird to enhance your baking efforts. (For baking rookies, a pie bird, set in the middle of a pie, is a vent that diverts steam from the filling to keep juices from overflowing.) The set is safe to use in the oven, dishwasher, freezer and microwave. It's $15 and offered in white, blue, red or green at Carson Pirie Scott stores. To order by mail, call (800) 663-8810 or go online at cooking.com.
More than peachy
So many jams are out there, it's easy to get jaded, but this Peach Rhubarb Grapefruit offering from Robert Rothschild Farm is something special.
The blend of flavors that still allows you to taste each of the three starring ingredients. It's great for breakfast breads or desserts, but the tart-sweet flavor also could work nicely with chicken or ham.
A 10.8-ounce jar costs $7.50-$8 at specialty stores. By mail, visit robertrothschild.com or call (800) 356-8933.
Cheese to pleasediscerning palates
Two new items are available from Fiscalini Farmstead in California, a dairy farm that produces handcrafted cheese products.
Purple Moon Cheddar lets you enjoy wine with your cheese, literally: Cheddar is soaked in cabernet sauvignon. (Lightly melting the cheese is recommended to temper the tannins.) It's $8-$10.50 per 8-ounce package, or $10-$15 per pound, at specialty stores and online at Amazon.com.
Horsefeathers, a mix of Cheddar cheese, sour cream and just enough horseradish to deliver a pleasant kick, is lots of fun as a spread or dip.
An 8-ounce package is $7 at specialty stores. To order either by mail, visit fiscalinicheese.com or call (800) 610-3276.
