Motorcyclist charged
WEATHERSFIELD -- A 23-year-old Mineral Ridge man, who crashed his motorcycle into a Weathersfield police car, has been arrested on traffic-related charges. The Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested Edward J. May, of Austintown-Warren Road, on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and failure to yield from a private drive. The crash happened Aug. 21 on Depot Road. May spent several days in St. Elizabeth Health Center after the crash. May is scheduled to appear in Niles Municipal Court on Thursday for an arraignment.
Plans to develop park
CORTLAND -- Officials plan to block future building on 15 acres of Trumbull County-owned land behind the county agricultural building on West Main Street in Cortland. If a grant application is successful, the property will be developed with gardens and walking trails, said county soil and water conservation district project manager David Brown. The trails will link to trails in Mosquito Lake State Park. Officials hope to place a conservation easement on the property in exchange for state funds to develop it as a park.
Workplace diversity event
LORDSTOWN -- Trumbull Career and Technical Center will host a half-day seminar on Friday as part of its "Partners for Workplace Diversity" event. The seminar will be from 8 a.m. to noon in the TCTC's adult training center, 1776 Salt Springs Road. The cost is $50, which includes the fee for breakfast and all materials. The seminar is called "Understanding Generations." Presenters are Dr. Anne McMahon of Youngstown State University; Sandy DeSantis of the Ohio Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation; Kerri Palmer of Barnes & amp; Noble Booksellers; and June Johnson of Home Savings & amp; Loan. Weathersfield 'Spirit Day'
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Local Schools will sponsor a community "Spirit Day" parade beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday. The parade will take place in conjunction with the annual pep rally and bonfire before the football game with rival McDonald. The football game takes place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Joe Lane Sports Complex.
The parade route starts at Prospect Street and travels along state Route 46 to Mineral Ridge Middle School, ending at the sports complex. Route 46 will be closed from 6 to 6:30 p.m. for the parade, with traffic directed to an alternate route.
The parade will be led by the United States Marine Color Guard from the Vienna Air Base, and will also feature the Mineral Ridge High School marching band; school floats; Angee Shaker, news anchor from WYTV Channel 33; athletic teams; and more. Bill Rummell, retired superintendent of Weathersfield Local Schools, will be the grand marshal.
Assault allegation
NILES -- A Warren man told police he was assaulted by the owner of a local car repair business when he tried to leave the parking lot. The 29-year-old Forest Glen man said he and the owner of Hanna's Complete Auto Care, Robbins Avenue, had a verbal disagreement about service and costs around 10:30 a.m. Monday. The man said when he began to leave the lot in his vehicle, the owner came through his car window and grabbed him by the shirt. The Warren man was advised to contact the Better Business Bureau and an attorney.
Check forgery charges
HUBBARD -- Two men are charged in connection with forging a check and cashing it. Timothy Fulton, 29, of Jacobs Road, is in the Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bond on a charge of forgery. He appeared Monday in Girard Municipal Court with a preliminary hearing scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. John Zumrick, 35, of South Bridge Street, Struthers, was charged with forgery and passing a bad check, said Detective Robert Altier. He is in the Mahoning County Jail. Altier said the men are accusing of taking Fulton's mother's check and cashing it for $1,000. There are more checks that haven't been returned.
