LAWRENCE COUNTY Nonprofit organization to accept passenger, truck tires for recycling



Households are limited to 12 tires each.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- PA Cleanways of Lawrence County will hold its annual tire day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wal-Mart Super Center located on Route 224 in Union Township.
Passenger, light-truck and standard truck tires will be accepted. All tires must be whole and uncut. The following charges will apply, and households are limited to 12 tires each:
UPassenger tires up to 15 inches: off rim, $2 each, on rim $5 each.
ULight-truck tires up to 18.5 inches: off rim, $4 each and on rim, $7 each.
U Large truck tires up to 24.5 inches: off rim only, $10 each.
Only cash will be accepted, no checks.
PA Cleanways of Lawrence County is a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate illegal dumping and littering through cleanups, recycling events, education and beautification. This is the group's third recycling event this year. It also has an ongoing recycling program for inkjet and toner cartridges, and cell phones.
Through cleanups and recycling programs the Lawrence County chapter of PA CleanWays has facilitated the removal of approximately 12,500 tires from throughout the county. Nearly 5,000 were from roadways and hillsides, while more than 7,500 were recycled by area residents. It has also recycled more than 168 appliances, 21 tons of magazines and 296 items of electronic waste. Chapter cleanups have removed more than 205 tons of trash from illegal dumps and litter areas. Of the trash removed, 47 tons were able to be recycled.
