Facing multiple charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jimmy Washington Jr., 41, of Cleveland was arrested around 1 a.m. Sunday on the South Side on charges of theft, making a false 911 call and obstruction of official business. Detective Sgts. Doug Bobovnyik and Bill Ross and Patrolman Carlo Eggleston were working a robbery detail on the South Side when Ross spotted Washington at a pay phone on South Avenue. Ross said Washington's physical description matched that of a suspect in several robberies. Detectives are expected to show his photograph to South Side business owners. Washington is accused of calling 911 and making a false report, which sent officers away from his location. When arrested after a brief chase, a frozen chicken dinner fell out of his coat. Police said they also found a bottle of soda, three sandwiches, candy bars and a pepperoni stick, most of which had been shoplifted from the Shell gas station on East Midlothian Boulevard.
Police identify victim
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 86-year-old woman who died after being hit by a cargo van over the weekend has been identified by police as Thelma Guarino of Homewood Avenue. Police said she was struck at 11:25 a.m. Friday as she walked through the parking lot of Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road. She died about six hours later. Lt. Mark Milstead, head of the accident investigation unit, said the fatality remains under investigation.
Break-in reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A break-in was discovered Sunday morning at a house with classrooms on Via Mount Carmel downtown owned by Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, police said. A rear window was broken and a microwave stolen, reports show.
Annual cemetery cleanup
YOUNGSTOWN -- The annual fall cleanup at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 5400 Market Street, will be Oct. 29-31. Decorations must be removed from graves by Oct. 28.
Candidates forum set
WARREN -- A candidates forum will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Warren YWCA. Participating will be candidates for 17th District Congress, 32nd District state senate, 64th and 65th District state representatives and Trumbull County commissioners. Questions will come from the audience. The event is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by The League of Women Voters, Trumbull County, the Warren YWCA and A. Philip Randolph Institute.
Kerry's stepson in area
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Andre Heinz, stepson of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, was expected to appear at noon today at the Lawrence County Young Democrats headquarters on East North Street.
3 arrested in beating
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Three high school students were arrested and charged with beating a bus driver so badly that he suffered a concussion in an apparent dispute over bus fare, authorities said. Allegheny County Port Authority bus driver John Shamitko and a group of teens began arguing when one of the youths refused to pay the fare Friday morning, authority spokesman Bob Grove said. The teens punched Shamitko and ripped a telephone handset from the bus and beat him with it, Grove said.
