W. Illinois comes back to win 40-31



SW Missouri kicked a 38-yard field goal in the last seconds of play to defeat Indiana State.

MACOMB, Ill. -- Steve LaFalce passed for 353 yards and four touchdowns Saturday, leading Western Illinois to a 40-31 victory over Illinois State.
LaFalce connected on 20 of 33 pass attempts, including nine completions to Reggie Gray, who finished with 198 receiving yards.
After trailing for most of the first half, Western Illinois (4-3, 2-1 Gateway) pulled within three points on a 2-yard touchdown run from LaFalce with just 17 seconds left in the second quarter. The Leathernecks then scored the next 16 points of the game to hold off the Redbirds.
Illinois State (3-3, 1-2 Gateway) gained 430 yards of total offense, but scored only seven points in the second half. Yance Vaughan led the Redbirds with 219 yards passing and three touchdowns, two in the air and one on the ground. Brian Thompson added 152 yards rushing and a touchdown.
SW Missouri St. 31, Indiana St. 28
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Jon Scifres kicked a 38-yard field goal with three seconds remaining for Southwest Missouri State.
The Sycamores (4-3, 1-2 Gateway) tied the score with 23 seconds to go on a 15-yard touchdown run by Phillip Johnson, but the Bears (5-2, 2-1) set up Scifres' winning kick with a 61-yard return by Scottie Reddix on the ensuing kickoff.
Cody Pratt then rushed 6 yards to the Indiana State 21, and after two timeouts, Scifres hit the game-winner.
S. Illinois 38, W. Kentucky 10
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Brandon Jacobs scored three rushing touchdowns as Southern Illinois defeated Western Kentucky.
Jacobs scored on three 1-yard runs and finished with 97 yards rushing on 19 carries. He was one of four Salukis who ran for over 50 yards, giving Southern Illinois 310 rushing yards in the game.
The Salukis (6-1, 3-0 Gateway) also got 163 passing yards from Joel Sambursky. Sambursky connected on 13 of 18 passes, including touchdown throws to Micah Turner and Brent Little.
Justin Haddix led Western Kentucky (4-2, 2-1), completing 16 of 25 passes for 202 yards. The Hilltoppers had four turnovers in the loss.
