A Youngstown woman was struck by a van in a food bank parking lot.
Four area residents were killed in separate traffic accidents Friday and Saturday in Mercer and Mahoning counties.
Greenville-West Salem police are investigating a fatal traffic accident involving a pedestrian that occurred about 2:40 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of state Route 18 and Chestnut Street in Greenville. Investigators would not release the victim's name or details of the crash Saturday, pending notification of the victim's family.
A dispatcher for Mercer County 911 said the accident was less than a mile from the scene of another fatal crash Friday morning in West Salem Township. Bryan A. Allen, 17, of Greenville, was killed when his car collided with a school bus. Thirteen pupils on the bus were taken to local hospitals.
Pennsylvania State Police, Mercer, are investigating a one-car accident that took the life of an 84-year-old Grove City woman.
Police said Samuel Winger, 81, and his wife, Betty Winger, 84, of Grove City were driving on state Route 208 in Pine Township just after noon Saturday when the 1996 Oldsmobile went off the road and into a ditch. Police said the car rolled over twice, coming to a rest on its wheels.
Betty Winger was killed in the accident.
Samuel Winger was flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in critical condition Saturday night.
Youngstown accident
Youngstown police are investigating an accident that took place around 11:30 a.m. Friday when an 87-year-old South Side woman was struck and critically injured in the parking lot of Second Harvest Food Bank, 2805 Salt Springs Road.
The woman later died about 6 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Health Center, according to Lt. Robin Lees, police department spokesman.
Lees said the woman had accompanied a member of the clergy to the food bank Friday. The clergyman went into the food bank and, for reasons unknown, the woman later got out of the car and while walking through the parking lot, was struck by a cargo van backing out of a parking space.
Police are investigating the accident while awaiting a ruling from the Mahoning Count coroner. The identity of the woman and driver were not released.
