Niles rolls past Struthers for third straight victory



Jared Sears led the Red Dragons to a 37-7 triumph.
STRUTHERS -- Jared Sears ran for two touchdowns and caught another from Joe Gillespie as the Niles High football team won its third game in a row, dropping host Struthers 37-7 on Friday.
Niles (4-4, 3-1) stayed a half-game behind Alliance in the Metro Athletic Conference standings with home games against Salem and Alliance remaining.
The Red Dragons ran 56 plays for 381 yards with 50 of those plays netting 289 yards on the ground. Sears, a senior tailback, gained 182 yards on 28 carries.
Struthers ran 47 plays for 212 yards with 32 of those plays netting 128 yards on the ground. Junior running back Justin Penson led the Wildcats (1-7, 0-4) with 66 yards on 12 carries, while junior running back Eric Anderson added 47 yards on nine attempts.
Sears' first touchdown, a 27-yarder, came on the first play following Jamil Cunningham's interception. Sears' TD at 10:23 and Ted Sloban's kick gave Niles a 7-0 lead.
Brian Button and Jon Hites also scored for the Red Dragons. Sloban finished with four PATs and a 25-yard field goal.
Struthers also lost three fumbles.
After getting hurt in the first quarter, Struthers sophomore quarterback Aaron Young was replaced by Mike Duponty, a junior. Duponty kicked an extra point following Struthers' lone touchdown by Eric Anderson in the second quarter.
Alliance 28Howland 7
ALLIANCE -- Steve Love carried 16 times for 105 yards and Kendall Davis added seven carries for 50 yards for the Aviators.
Quarterback Charles Babb had a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs for Alliance (6-2, 4-1), which plays Canton Timken next week. Josh Baker also had a 1-yard TD run as the Aviators held a 222-123 edge on the ground.
Babb completed 4 of 10 for 130 yards, including an 87-yard touchdown pass to Bylynn Hatcher.
Lance Smith had 18 carries for 76 yards for Howland (5-3, 2-3), which has lost three straight. Nick Lyon added 12 carries for 60 yards. Howland had five fumbles, losing one.
Brad Lockney was 1 for 6 for the Tigers, completing a 25-yard pass to Jeff Elston.
Poland 17Campbell 14
CAMPBELL -- Don Marchidone scored on a 24-yard run as the Bulldogs (2-6) rallied with 9 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter for the victory.
Junior Derrell Johnson of Campbell carried 27 times for 168 yards and went over 1,000 yards (1,129) for the season and he scored on a 1-yard run and threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Rosetal.
Jim Shirilla rushed 26 times for 167 yards, which included a 35-yard TD run to give Poland a 6-0 lead in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs gained 207 yards on 43 attempts and the were 2 of 4 passing for 22.
The Red Devils (1-7) gained 238 yards on 42 attempts and they were 2 of 5 passes for 43.
