KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Council 274 honors man of the year



YOUNGSTOWN -- Knights of Columbus Youngstown Council 274 honored the Rev. Regis Heuschkel as 2004 Man of the Year at its annual event honoring Christopher Columbus held Oct. 10 at St. Anthony's DeMarinis Hall.
Father Heuschkel has served as the council's worthy chaplain since 1997 and is a fourth degree sir knight. Born in 1923 in New York City, he attended Fordham College in 1940 to 1943 and entered the Dominican Order in 1943. He studied theology at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C., and was ordained a priest in June 1950.
In 1961 Father Heuschkel was assigned to St. Mary Church in New Haven, Conn., where he served as a parochial assistant. He was pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Somerset from 1977 to 1983 and then was pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Columbus from 1983 to 1987. He served at St. Louis Bertrand Parish in Louisville, Ky., from 1987 to 1989 prior to being assigned to St. Dominic Church in Youngstown.
Also recognized was retired auxiliary Bishop Benedict C. Franzetta, who was presented with a framed reproduction of his Bishop's Crest.
The council began honoring Columbus in the late 1890s in celebration of their American heritage, Catholic faith and Columbian Knighthood.
