INDYCAR SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP Kanaan has two more goals he can reach today in finale

Although he has the season title clinched, he can set two precedents today.
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Tony Kanaan isn't planning to take an easy drive to the IndyCar Series championship.
While he has the season title clinched even before firing up his engine, Kanaan still has a couple of goals he can accomplish at Texas Motor Speedway.
Kanaan can become the first driver in a major American motorsports series to complete every lap of the season. And he can be the first driver to sweep both Texas races in the same season.
"I don't have the pressure, but I still have to do my job," Kanaan said. "Especially here with the type of racing we have. You have to concentrate. When I'm in the car, I'm just serious. The effort will be the same, the amount of work as well."
Placed 10th
Kanaan qualified 10th for today's 200-lap Chevy 500, which will be the last season finale at the 1 1/2-mile high-banked racetrack.
This has been a charmed season for Kanaan, who has avoided accidents, engine failures and even flat tires for all 3,105 laps this season.
"If it happens now, the only bad thing will be that I didn't complete every lap of every race," Kanaan said. "And if it happens, it happened at the right time."
Kanaan has three wins this season, including Texas in June when he led 145 of 200 laps and beat Andretti Green Racing teammate Dario Franchitti by a quarter of a second. He also has five runner-up finishes, including California two weeks ago to clinch the season title.
The four Andretti Green drivers, all in the top eight in points and winners in eight of the 15 races, qualified in successive order. Bryan Herta was seventh, ahead of Dan Wheldon, Franchitti and Kanaan.
Broken bone
While the impact on his body from a practice crash Saturday was minimal, Franchitti broke a small bone in his left foot. IRL medical officials cleared him to drive today.
"Something broke, and we're not quite sure what," Franchitti said. "The car just spun on me and went into the wall sideways. It was a left-side hit, and I had my left foot on the clutch pedal."
Franchitti was walking with the aid of crutches, and will determine today morning if he can drive. If he does, he will have to move to the back of the field in a repaired or new car.
Helio Castroneves is on the pole for the fourth straight race, matching an IRL record after a qualifying lap of 215.996 mph. He will be joined on the front row at the start of the race by Marlboro Team Penske teammate Sam Hornish Jr., who qualified third behind Tomas Scheckter.
Moving to the rear
IRL officials said Saturday that Scheckter and Panther Racing teammate Townsend Bell (13th) would move to the rear of the field because of chassis technical violations found during post-qualfying inspection. The team was also fined an undisclosed amount.
Panther Racing said both cars had passed two previous inspections before qualifying Friday.
This is the fifth straight IRL season finale in Texas, the only track that has regularly hosted two races. The circuit will end in California next year and run only once in Texas, in June, the first race after Indianapolis as usual.
The IRL added three non-oval tracks in 2005, and Texas will have a second NASCAR Nextel Cup race beginning next fall.
