Getting there: The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania runs for about 50 miles along Pine Creek in Tioga County. State park access is just outside Wellsboro along Route 6 in north-central Pennsylvania. It's 140 miles east of Erie, 90 miles west of Scranton and 100 miles north of Harrisburg.
Where to go: Two state parks sit across the canyon from each other. Leonard Harrison State Park has a visitor's center, a paved lookout area and a hiking trail (with solid handrails) from the rim to the canyon floor. Colton Point State Park is more rugged but hosts the spectacular West Rim Trail, which climbs up the canyon's side. The Barbour Rock Trail is easier and has the same great views. Campsites available at both parks. For details, visit www.visittiogapa.com/grandcanyon or call (888) PA-PARKS.
What to do: Rent canoes, kayaks or rafts and paddle Pine Creek, or rent bicycles to pedal the rails-to-trails path alongside the creek. Mountain biking trails available on nearby state forest land.
