TRUMBULL COUNTY MetroParks plans to add three holes to golf course; build picnic pavilion
The pavilion will be built with state funds.
CHAMPION -- Trumbull County MetroParks will expand its Champion flying-disc golf course and build a pavilion on land transferred for their use by Trumbull County commissioners.
The property, near the Fairhaven workshop on Educational Parkway, is some of the county's most prime development acreage, officials say.
Commissioners Dan Polivka and James Tsagaris voted to give the park system 1.4 acres, and to give an easement for recreational purposes on 3.5 acres.
Commissioners can revoke the easement with 30 days notice. Commissioners also could exercise the provision to make the property available for commercial development.
The partially wooded property made available to the parks system by easement will be developed only with walking trails and three additional holes for the adjacent flying-disc golf course, said Bill Flynn, MetroParks chairman.
The 1.4 acres given to the park system outright will be developed with a picnic pavilion, Flynn said.
Although the property is about 1.4 miles from the southern end of the Western Reserve Bikeway, Educational Parkway has light traffic and many bikers already park their cars in the area, he said.
As the bike trail is extended south it will get closer to the property, Flynn said.
The parks board hopes to eventually build restrooms near the pavilion.
The pavilion and a bike trail maintenance building off state Route 305 are to be built with $50,000 dedicated to the park in the state budget.
