TENNIS Canfield, Poland teams advance



Competition to determine seeding for the state tournament is Saturday.
ROCKY RIVER -- Rachel McGowan and Renee Lesnett of Canfield High have reached the semifinals in doubles at the Division I district tennis tournament at Tri-City Park courts.
Thursday, the Cardinals' duo defeated Courtney Kahl and Caitlan Kahl of Chardon, 6-0, 6-0, then topped Revere's Isabelle Simon and Chelsea Gray, 6-1, 6-1.
McGowan and Lesnett will take on Lindsay Holloway and Kori Linzle of Shaker Heights on Saturday morning. Championship and consolation matches will follow.
Gett, Mullis advance
CANTON -- The Poland doubles team of Samantha Gett and Jessica Mullis won two matches in the Div. II district tournament at Weis Park courts.
The Bulldogs defeated Lauren Berk and Lauren Campana of Elyria Catholic 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, then beat Christy Carr and Mary Catherine Beck of Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas 6-2, 7-6(6).
In a semifinal match Saturday, Gett and Mullis will play Walsh Jesuit's Betsy Reed and Meghan Wells, who eliminated Warren JFK's Hilary and Alison Rossi, 6-0, 6-1, and Mimi Bell and Shanika Ransinghe of Laurel, 6-0, 6-2.
The Poland doubles team of Megan Bennett and Alexa Marino won a opening-round match over Lauren Zeman and Nicole Rex of Akron Elms, 6-0, 6-1; then lost to Lindsey Fleisnner and Ashley Kurtz of Walsh Jesuit, 6-4, 7-6.
In singles, Kim Ezzo of Ursuline lost a first-round match to Tanisha Welch of Cleveland School of the Arts, 6-1, 6-0.
Becca Brocker of Mooney defeated Maria Burns of Medina 6-0, 6-0; then was defeated by Kristen McPhillips of Hathaway Brown, 6-0, 6-0.
April Scudere of Brookfield lost to Natalie Aleman of Cuyahoga Falls Christian Academy, 6-1, 6-0 in the first round.
Following the semifinals, there will be championship and consolation matches.
