Last Friday night, Akron Hoban's Tyrell Sutton ran for 505 yards and eight touchdowns in a 61-28 comeback win over Ursuline, which led 21-0 into the second quarter.
Sutton scored on runs of 33, 68, 7, 1, 47, 29, 8 and 38 yards. The eight TDs are one off the Ohio record, and the 505 yards is third-best in the state.
"It was one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed," Hoban coach Ralph Orsini said.
Then on Saturday, Sutton's older brother Tony rushed for 286 yards on 28 carries in the College of Wooster's 84-21 win over Kenyon. Tony tied his own North Coast Conference record with six touchdowns and became the Fighting Scots' career rushing leader with 4,247 yards.
For the weekend, the Suttons combined for 791 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Ohio record
Cameron Campeau, a 5-11, 205-pound junior, carried the ball an Ohio prep record 63 times for 413 yards as Kettering Fairmont beat Springfield South, 41-34. He ran for six touchdowns and two extra-point conversions, accounting for all but one of Fairmont's points.
Incredibly, Campeau didn't come all that close to the national record. Russell Gunter of Andalusia (Ala.) Straugh carried 72 times for 331 yards in 1986 against Coffey Springs, Ala.
Campeau could have come close to the record, however. He sat out one series in the opening quarter while getting his ankle re-taped, and Fairmont's QB took a knee with a minute to go to run out the clock.
Rush week
Alliance's Steve Love, who replaced injured star Kendell Davis (broken shoulder) in week four, has rushed for 525 yards on 64 carries since; Jake McSurley rushed 15 times for 228 yards and scored seven touchdowns in Clinton-Massie's 50-0 win over Bethel-Tate; Cody Boyd ran 17 times for 313 yards and five TDs as Troy defeated Vandalia Butler, 52-7; and Canton McKinley's Ryan Brinson rushed for 262 yards and three TDs on 20 carries in a 45-0 win over Boardman.
Minerva halfbacks Jeb Ford and Tim Cox rushed for 248 and 222 yards, respectively, in 61-32 win over Marlington; Stephen Ford rushed for 210 yards and three TDs as Cambridge moved to 6-0 with a 41-14 win over Coshocton; Shenandoah's Jacob Zerkle rushed for a school-record 286 yards and four TDs on 35 carries in a 34-20 upset of Woodsfield Monroe Central; Delphos St. John's Matt Shumaker steamrolled his way to 216 yards on 29 carries in a 37-7 victory over Sidney Lehman; Middletown Fenwick ran the ball 66 times for 459 yards -- and never attempted a pass -- in a 49-29 win over Oxford Talawanda; and Ashtabula Lakeside's Jamarro Spikes rushed for 200 yards on 14 carries and scored on runs of 8, 49 and 75 yards in a 42-0 victory over Jefferson Area.
