CROSS COUNTRY Mooney, Salem runners to compete at Earich Invitational
Saturday's race will be at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
BAZETTA -- The boys Division II run at Saturday's Sim Earich Invitational cross country meet will feature Colin Durina of Cardinal Mooney High in the 5,000-meter race at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.
Twenty-six schools are entered in the race, including defending team champion, Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.
Mooney, Salem, Girard, Struthers, LaBrae, Liberty, Lakeview, Champion, East Palestine and Brookfield will have athletes in the boys and girls runs.
Salem has won Metro Athletic Conference and Columbiana County titles this season, with Patrick Gorby, Aimon Scullion, Paul Shivers and Joe Shivers expected to challenge for Earich team laurels.
The Quakers placed second at the 2003 meet and Mooney was third. The Cardinals return all four runners: Durina (16:49) who finished fourth, Dan Finnerty, Noah Brak and Brian Stevens.
Girls
Six area schools are entered in the girls Div. II run. Deidre Clary (16:38) was third last year as Salem placed second in the race won by Walsh Jesuit.
Mooney, Champion, Lakeview, LaBrae and Liberty also are entered, with Liz Shivers, Erin Murphy and Sarah Yerkey of Salem; Katie Scannell, Nicole Taddei and Ashley Tonkovich of Lakeview; and Michelle Bafunno and Erin Fisher of Champion.
McDonald, Maplewood and Lordstown finished first through third, respectively, in last year's Div. III run. Tom Andriko, Ryan Wanger and Joel DiEugenio of the Red Devils; Aaron Thornton and Joe Copploe of McDonald and Andy Arnio and Andy Morgan will be featured in the race.
Samantha Bonar of Badger defends her girls Div. III title. St. Thomas Aquinas is defending champ. Krista Humphrey, Nikki Grant, Autumn Shamrock and Kristen Gibbs of Maplewood and Renee McGraw, Elizabeth Burr and Christi Stahl of the Braves will compete for team honors.
Cleveland St. Ignatius, which won the boys Div. I Spartan Invitational, defends its Earich title. Howland and Niles are the area entries in the field of 17 schools.
Ashtabula Lakeside is the girls div. I defending champion.
The Federal League cross country meet also is slated Saturday at Austintown Township Park with the first race scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
