SCOTTISH RITE CATHEDRAL Pittsburgh Symphony to kick off Pops series
Two young singers from Pennsylvania will join the musicians onstage.
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Pops series at Scottish Rite Cathedral will begin another season Monday with a vocal showcase, featuring a Broadway star and two future stars with Pittsburgh ties.
Conductor Marvin Hamlisch and the orchestra will perform the music of Barbra Streisand tonight through Sunday in Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh, as well as at 8 p.m. Monday at the Cathedral, 110 E. Lincoln Ave. Julie Budd, star of one-woman shows in Las Vegas, Atlantic City and London, will sing some of Streisand's classics. That includes a Hamlisch composition, "The Way We Were," and two Jules Styne & amp; Bob Merrill-written songs, "Don't Rain on My Parade" and "People."
"I chose Julie Budd to sing these songs because she is the artist I think sounds most like Barbra, truly a rare find," Hamlisch said in PSO's press materials. Hamlisch worked with Streisand on the movies "Funny Girl" and "The Way We Were" as well as her 1994 concert tour.
Budd and Hamlisch performed last weekend with National Symphony Orchestra at Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
Also onstage
Joining them and PSO musicians onstage will be Steven Brinberg, a renowned Streisand impersonator, and young singers Vanessa Campagna and Rocky Paterra. Vanessa, 11, of Beaver Falls, Pa., has performed onstage with country singer Wynonna Judd, on the CBS talent show "Star Search" and on Pittsburgh TV station KDKA. Rocky, 12, of Whitehall, Pa., has appeared in Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera's production of "A Musical Christmas Carol"; with Pittsburgh Symphony at its gala concert "The Music of Fred Rogers"; and with National Symphony Orchestra.
Tickets are $21 to $63. Call (412) 392-4900 to place orders.
This year marks the 10th season that Hamlisch has been principal conductor of PNC Pittsburgh Symphony Pops.
