Champion's Max Brugler sets season assist record
Brugler finished with 36 assists for the undefeated Flashes.
CHAMPION -- Max Brugler set a state record for assists in a season, leading the Champion High boys soccer team to a 12-3 victory over Newton Falls Wednesday.
The victory also clinched the third straight Trumbull Athletic Conference championship for the Golden Flashes.
Champion (12-0-4) finished with an undefeated regular season for the first time in school history.
Brugler had seven assists, giving him 36 for the season. Dresden Tri-Valley's Kolby Lacrone set the previous record of 34 in 2002.
John Emery scored seven goals -- he has 47 this season. Chris Palm added two goals, while Nathan Blazek, Brett Sulonen and Trent Williams had one each.
Sulonen, Kevin Ramsey and Tyler LeMon all had one assist.
For Newton Falls, Fred Harris had two goals and an assist, while Ryan Staunton scored once.
Columbiana 4, East Palestine 3
COLUMBIANA -- Eric Ostrander, Kyle Martin, Julie Casscchia and Andrew Stryffeler each scored goals as Columbiana High edged East Palestine 4-3 in a boys soccer game Wednesday.
David Jackson and Ostrander had an assist apiece for the Clippers. Ryan Guy had seven saves.
Ricky Plum, Jo Bollinger and Corey Brittain each scored a goal for the Bulldogs.
Mooney 4, Hubbard 1
STRUTHERS -- Kiki Willis scored three goals to pace the Cardinals (13-0-1). Zack Hernan had the other goal.
Mooney had 15 shots on goal and Hubbard had three.
Jeff Seddon, goalkeeper for the Cardinals, had two saves.
Girls
BELOIT -- Annastacia Filippidis, Rachel Albani and Deja Amato each scored a goal as Howland (11-0-3) defeated West Branch 3-2.
Filippidis and Amato had an assist apiece.
Ashley Kurena scored both goals for the Warriors (8-8). McKenzie Wallace and Lisa Bell had assists.
Howland had 29 shots on goal and West Branch had 10.
Carli Poffenberger had 22 saves for West Branch. Melissa Airhart of Howland had nine saves.
Edgewood 3, Badger 2
ASHTABULA -- Crystal Thompson, Megan Hamilton and Heather Dickey each had a goal for Edgewood (9-4-3). Thompson had an assist.
Alivia Nuzzo and Jenna Miller scored a goal and assist apiece for the Braves (12-4).
Elizabeth Cervany, goalie for Edgewood, had 15 saves, and Hayley Jenkins had six for Badger.
