SOLICITATION HUD worker wanted sex with 3 kids
Undercover agents created a phony family to trap the suspect.
HARRISBURG (AP) -- An underwriter for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development pleaded guilty Monday to attempting to solicit sex with children using his office computer.
Dominic Garofano, 47, of Lansdowne, was accused of soliciting sex from a family he believed was willing to allow him to have sex with their young children. But the "family" turned out to be Special Agent Dennis T. Guzy, head of the Attorney General's Child Exploitation Unit.
"The children in this case do not exist, neither does the mother," said Eric R. Augustine, deputy attorney general, who prosecuted the case.
Judge Lawrence F. Clark Jr. of Dauphin County Court is not expected to sentence Garofano until early next year. Garofano faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
How he was caught
In July 2003, Garofano responded to an ad posted by undercover agents offering sex with a family consisting of 9- and 12-year-old girls and a 7-year-old boy.
Agents determined that although Garofano was using a Yahoo! account, the e-mails originated from the HUD office in Philadelphia during business hours.
Authorities said he was caught at his desk trying to download a supposed picture of the family. He surrendered in October 2003 and is suspended from his job.
