NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Mayor Robert Carson invites village residents to apply for an upcoming vacancy on the village planning and zoning committee.
Anyone interested in the volunteer position should send a letter to Carson at the Village Building on state Route 170 by Nov. 3.
The committee meets as needed.
Burglary at business
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said someone pried open a door to get into an office at Dunbar Slag at 30 Ohio St.
The intruder stole a small amount of cash and a pair of new, size 9 Rocky boots valued at $140.
The burglary occurred between 4 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Monday.
School supplies collected
FARRELL, Pa. -- The annual School Tools drive conducted by employees of UPMC Horizon secured enough support to provide school supplies to more than 2,000 children in six local school districts.
Individual hospital departments at UPMC's Farrell and Greenville facilities collect school supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks, tissues, toothbrushes and crayons for the program which benefits underprivileged schoolchildren.
The program is sponsored by UPMC NeighborLink.
Staffs in the operating room at Shenango Valley and the transitional care center at Greenville collected the most supplies.
The drive got some help from the UPMC Horizon Community Health Foundation which donated $500 to buy more supplies, allowing the program to reach out to a sixth school district this year.
The school supplies were distributed to children in Commodore Perry, Farrell Area, Greenville Area, Jamestown Area, Reynolds and Sharon City school districts.
Ex-patrolman arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Chris Bonacci, who resigned last November as a city patrolman, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. today in the 300 block of Cohasset Drive on a drug charge.
Bonacci, 33, of North Bon Air Avenue, was a passenger in a car driven by Denise Geddie, 19, of Roxbury Avenue, police said.
Geddie was driving with the high beams on and no license-plate light, police said.
Bonacci was arrested on a charge of possession of cocaine and Geddie was charged with driving under suspension.
Police said they found suspected crack in the car.
Flu shots canceled
Tops grocery stores have canceled all of its flu shot sessions that were scheduled after Saturday because of a vaccine shortage.
Company officials said that clinics scheduled before Saturday will have flu vaccine available, while supplies last, for high-risk individuals only.
High-risk individuals are adults 65 or older, residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities, people with chronic lung or heart disease, including asthma, health-care workers with direct contact with patients, primary care givers of those with children less than 6 months of age.

Administrator honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- Laura McLaughlin, Youngstown Municipal Court administrator, was among 30 graduates of a weeklong court management program recently honored in Columbus by Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer.
The program addresses many of the issues, including improved skills in case management, budgeting, technology and human resources, Moyer said.
McLaughlin, a licensed social worker and certified chemical dependency counselor, has been court administrator since April 2001.
Her experience includes 10 years managing a community corrections facility.
Cleaning up park
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- City workers plan to clean up Mellon Square Park, which is often frequented by vagrants and left littered with trash. Guy Costa, head of the city's Department of Public Works, said people in the park were given several days' notice about today's cleanup. He said those who leave items behind can retrieve them at designated areas.
