Mooney girls end second straight SVC year unbeaten
John Emery reached 40 goals for the season in Champion's win.
WARREN -- The Cardinal Mooney High girls soccer team completed its second straight undefeated season in the Steel Valley Conference with a 6-0 win over host Warren Harding on Monday.
Nomiki Frangopoulos and Kara Joseph each scored two goals for the Cardinals (13-1-1, 6-0), who outscored SVC opponents 37-1. Vickie Dreiling and Bridget Crogan added goals and Kelly Burke, Frangopoulos and Crogan had assists.
Veronica Skowron and Natalie Humphreys combined on Mooney's 10th shutout this season.
Nick Bellas had six saves for Harding.
Boardman 3, Massillon Perry 0
MASSILLON -- Mallory Hay, Caitlyn Hackett and Lauren Sirak scored for the Spartans in their Federal League game. Sirak also recorded an assist.
Spartan keeper Lani Vlad clinched the shutout with six saves.
Warren JFK 4, Maplewood 0
CORTLAND -- Genna Roman had two goals and Lexie Polivka and Zeina Abdul-Aal each had one for the Eagles (8-7).
Polivka had two assists, while Jenn Natale, Lauren Broadbent and Taylor Gee each added one. Jacquee Lombardi had two saves.
Bonne Clute had nine saves for Maplewood (4-9-2).
Howland 4, Alliance 0
ALLIANCE -- Annastacia Filippidis had two goals and an assist to lead the Tigers (10-0-3, 9-0) in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Koren Phillips and Melissa Kohn added goals, while Kohn, Deja Amato and Rachel Albani had assists. Goalkeepers Melissa Airhart and Megan McCloughlin combined for three saves.
Alliance is 2-12, 0-10.
Niles 2, Struthers 0
STRUTHERS -- Chelsea Blank and Bethany English scored goals to lead the Red Dragons past Struthers. Goalkeeper Natalie Thomas recorded the shutout.
For Struthers (4-7-2), which played Niles to a scoreless tie at halftime, goalkeeper Maddy Giancola made 14 saves.
Newton Falls 6, Liberty 1
LIBERTY -- Mary Jo Spletzer, Kourtni Collins and Courtney Kubicina each had a goal and an assist for Newton Falls in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Bethany Runtas, Caitlyn Martin and Casee Piquet also scored for the Tigers (6-6-3, 4-3), while Grace Spletzer, Lauren Mauric and Julie Davis also had assists. Jessica Moser had one save.
For Liberty, Amy Banner scored on an assist by Ashley McGee. Brittany Schimpf had nine saves and Zoe Sniderman added four.
Champion 4, Lakeview 1
CHAMPION -- Eliza Slama scored twice, while Carlie Dawson and Jenna Lee added goals for the Golden Flashes (8-3-4).
Dawson, Brittany Skeels, Christen Hernandez and Jessica Bennett added assists. Goalkeeper Jessica Wood made 12 saves.
Briana Yocum scored for Lakeview (10-3), and goalkeeper Lyndsay Mellot had 11 saves.
West Branch 4, St. Thomas 2
BELOIT -- Amy Rice had two goals and McKenzie Wallace and Courtney Salvino each had one for the Warriors.
Ashley Kurena and Lisa Bell added assists for West Branch (8-7) and Carli Poffenberger had six saves.
Ali Jonas had a goal and an assist for Aquinas and Courtney Brown also scored. Danielle Coon and Kristen Soles combined for 11 saves.
Boys
LEAVITTSBURG -- Champion senior John Emery scored four goals -- extending his own single-season school record to 40 -- and Max Brugler added a goal and three assists for Champion, which beat LaBrae 7-0 in a TAC game.
Brugler has 29 assists this season to extend his school record. The previous record was 13.
Chris Palm added a goal and an assist for the Flashes (11-0-4, 7-0-2), who are ranked second in the state in Division III in this week's coaches poll. Kevin Ramsey also scored, Reggie Rooks had an assist and Rich Slama had one save.
Dan Dean made 21 saves for LaBrae, which was outshot 24-2.
East Liverpool 4, Columbiana 2
COLUMBIANA -- Kyle Martin scored both goals for Columbiana and Ryan Guy had 11 saves.
Four different players scored for the Potters.
