Union is reportedly more than $1 million in debt
CHERRY HILL, N.J. (AP) -- A union representing 13,500 food handlers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware is bankrupt and more than $1 million in debt, according to a published report.
Local 56 of the United Food and Commercial Workers of America is being scrutinized following the resignation of its president amid charges he funneled money from the local's health and welfare fund to its operating account, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported in Sunday editions.
The newspaper, citing unnamed sources, reported the federal Labor Department has started an investigation into the union, which represents people who mostly work in supermarket deli, seafood and meat departments.
Union officials said the local's troubles were spotted earlier in the year after then-President Anthony Cinaglia moved $287,000 from the health and welfare fund into the union's operating account.
