Angelo Pezzuolo (Football 1951-54) -- Angelo Pezzuolo is another key member of the Youngstown football program in the early 1950s who is being inducted into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame. Pezzuolo started at end, a modern day wide receiver, and linebacker for the Penguins from 1951 through 1954. During his four years with the program, YC posted a 20-12-1 record, including a 14-3 record during his final two years. In 1953, Coach Dike Beede's crew finished with a 7-1 mark while in 1954, the Penguins posted a 7-2 ledger.
Lester Weaver (Football 1991-94) -- Lester Weaver was a vocal on-field leader who epitomized the emotion, pride, perfection, great expectations and high standards of the Youngstown State football program. Weaver was a free safety for YSU from 1991 through 1994 as the Penguins won national titles in three of his four campaigns. While in the secondary, he recorded 170 total tackles, finishing third in school history with 16 interceptions. He also tallied 221 interception return yards, the second most in YSU history. Weaver also finished with 10 pass breakups. Weaver's senior year was his most decorated. He was a first-team All-America selection by The Associated Press, the Football Gazette, the AFCA and The Sports Network.
Randy Smith (Football 1991-94) -- Randy Smith owns four Youngstown State football records that still exist today. Smith was a member of the Penguin football program from 1991 through 1994 helping lead the program to National Titles in three of his four seasons. As of this season, Smith still holds school records for most interceptions in a game (three vs. Samford in 1991), career pass breakups (29), kickoff return yards average in a season (33.1 in 1994) and interception return yards in a season (141 in 1991). At YSU, he started 55 games in his successful career. He finished his four years with the Penguins recording 173 tackles, 110 solo stops, 39 pass breakups and 13 interceptions. He also had two returns for touchdowns on defense.
Chris Sammarone (Football 1992-1994) -- Chris Sammarone came home to play football at Youngstown State at the right time. After a standout career at Chaney High School, he originally went to Kentucky to play football. But in 1991, he decided to return to Youngstown and play for Coach Jim Tressel and the Penguins. After sitting out the 1991 season because of then-NCAA transfer regulations, Sammarone started his final three years at center helping lead the Penguins to two national titles and three National Championship game appearances. Sammarone, who's father Chuck played at Youngstown from 1961 through 1964, anchored the offensive line during his three seasons wearing the Red and White. In 1994, he was selected as the YSU's Jim Zdelar Big Mac Offensive Lineman of the Year. Nationally, he earned first-team All-America honors by The Associated Press, The Sports Network and the Football Gazette.
Reggie Kemp (Men's Basketball 1988-93) -- Reggie Kemp, who ranks as the Youngstown State men's basketball programs fifth all-time leading scorer, holds two records that may never be broken. Kemp, who was a forward for the Penguins during his five-year career, holds school records in free-throws made (424) and free-throws attempted (633). On a yearly average, he made more than 105 free-throws and attempted 150 per season. In his career, he scored 1,820 points to rank fifth all-time in school history. He scored in double figures an amazing 86 times and had at least 20 on 43 occasions. He also finished with 20 double-doubles. As a junior and senior, he was an second-team All-Independent selection.
Donna Djorovic (Women's Basketball 1989-93) -- Donna Djorovic is the best shot blocker in Youngstown State women's basketball history. Djorovic, who was a center for the Penguins from 1989-1993, finished her career with 196 blocked shots, over 70 more than any other Penguin in school history. She holds three of the top four blocked shots seasons in school history. She ranks 18th at YSU in career scoring with 915 points. She finished her career grabbing an impressive 616 rebounds. In her 102-game career, she scored in double figures 44 times, had 23 double-digit rebound games and 19 double-doubles. As a senior in 1992-93, she was a second-team All Mid-Con pick and later in the year was named to the Mid-Con's All-Tournament team.
Mona Jackson (Track & amp; Field 1990-94) -- Mona Jackson had an exceptional Youngstown State track career as a sprinter and 10 years later is now close to completing her quest of earning her Ph.D. in History from Michigan State University. The 1993-94 Vindicator Student-Athlete of the Year, she set five school records -- 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters in the outdoor and the 55-meter and 200-meter dash in indoor competition -- during her senior campaign. Her three outdoor marks still rank in the top three in school history. Jackson is a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University. She is currently in South Africa working with the University of KwaZulu Natal as part of a Fulbright Award conducting dissertation research.
