Ursuline's Kim Ezzo wins crown

BOARDMAN -- Kim Ezzo's finger bled. Her hip ached. In the end, none of that mattered.
The Ursuline High sophomore had won the Division II sectional tennis title Saturday at Boardman High School.
Labeled the day's best match, which came in a semifinal, Ezzo overcame injuries and Cardinal Mooney's Becca Brocker for 2 1-2 hours before winning 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
That advanced third-seeded Ezzo to the championship match, where she defeated Poland freshman Alyssa Tom 6-1, 6-1.
Tom gained her championship opportunity after stunning top-seed Jill Martin of West Branch last week and stopping Brookfield's April Scudere, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals.
Brocker finished third after beating Scudere, 6-3, 6-2.
In an all-Poland doubles final Saturday, the team of Megan Bennett and Alexa Marino defeated Jessica Mullis and Samantha Gett 6-4, 6-1.
Mullis-Gett had upset top-seeded Hilary and Alison Rossi of Warren JFK, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinals, while second-seeded Bennett-Marino rallied to defeat third-seeded Rachel Ballas and Alyssa Mootz of Liberty, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1.
Ballas-Mootz held off the Rossi sisters in the third-place match, 6-4, 6-3.
All semifinalists advanced to the district tournament, which will be held Oct. 14 and Oct. 16 in Canton.

CANTON -- The Canfield doubles team of Rachel McGowan and Renee Lesnett captured the sectional title Saturday.

The Cardinals also beat Jackson's Stacy Conlan and Caitlen Klausner 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.
Canfield's Dana Griesmer lost a quarterfinal match, falling to second-seeded Lanna Buehler of Wooster, 1-6, 1-6.
The district tournament will be held next week at Tri-City Park in Rocky River.
