HUBBARD -- Tony Giancola rushed for 236 yards and the Hubbard offense registered 601 yards of total offense, 517 on the ground, as the host Eagles easily defeated the upstart LaBrae Vikings, 53-6, in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game on Friday.
"Tony Giancola just continues to improve and surprises me in the process," Hubbard head coach Jeff Bayuk said. "This was a tough week of preparation for us and I must credit our two offensive coordinators, Rod Greenamyer and Gary Zetts. They put together an excellent run and pass game plan and it was executed well tonight. Kudos to our offensive line as well."
Scored on first play
Giancola's 80-yard touchdown scamper on the Eagles' first play from scrimmage set the tone of the game as Hubbard (6-0, 4-0) scored on its first five offensive series to take a commanding 40-6 halftime lead.
"The bottom line is we didn't give Hubbard much of a game tonight," Viking head coach Bill Bohren said. "When you spot someone six points on the first play of the game it's tough to play catch up with a team the caliber of Hubbard.
"The last two weeks we just haven't played well. We didn't execute like we are capable of tonight, dropping some passes but that didn't make a difference. We just need to get better."
After Giancola gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead just 1:10 into the game, fullback Ben Lane scored his two touchdowns on runs of 20 and three yards. Quarterback Bryan Boyce then found Scott Patterson with a 14-yard scoring strike to give the Eagles a 27-0 advantage 12 minutes into the game.
Giancola carried the ball just six times for 197 yards in the first quarter alone.
"I am sure that [Tony] Giancola would give credit to his blocking back [Ben] Lane tonight," Bayuk said. "We must remain focused and continue to improve because anyone in this league can knock anyone off on any given night. Being consistent at our level is important. Right now I feel we're both improving and consistent in our play."
Took commanding lead
When Boyce found Russell Hawkins with a 34-yard scoring strike just 1:43 into the second quarter, the Eagles forged a 34-0 advantage.
The Vikings' Todd Rowan then hit Eric Hart at the 4:26 mark of the second period with a 78-yard scoring strike for their only score of the game. When Joel Younkins scored from nine yards out, the Eagles built a 34-6 lead.
Hubbard scored the only two touchdowns of the second half. Younkins scored from 18 yards out at 6:48 of the third period while Boyce's 57-yard scamper at the 3:22 mark rounded out the scoring.
The Eagles had 517 yards rushing on 57 carries while the Vikings (4-3, 2-2) had 19 rushing yards on 14 carries and 212 total offensive yards.
Hubbard held a 23-10 first down advantage.
