SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
National observance
The Columbiana County Educational Service Center will recognize National School Bus Safety week Oct. 17-23 with the theme "Flashing Red Means Danger Ahead." Some facts to remember and safety tips:
Eighty percent of Ohio pupils ride school buses each day.Most accidents occur within a 10-foot perimeter around the bus, especially near the front bumper and the right rear tire.Make sure backpack straps and drawstrings and clothing is short or kept close to the child's body. It can catch on the handrails or doors of the bus.Get to the bus stop early.Take 10 big steps away from the curb before waiting for the bus, and take 10 big steps when leaving the bus.Never try to get anything left on the bus.Never reach underneath the bus.Always follow the driver's directions for crossing the street.Be alert for traffic and look both ways.Always walk in front of the bus.For more information, visit www.ccesc.--k12.oh.us/transportation/index.htm.
