Scarbrough finishes second for B-W golfers



BEREA -- Charles Scarbrough II, a senior on the Baldwin-Wallace College golf team from Howland High, posted the second-best stroke average on the team for the fall season that concluded recently.
Scarbrough, one of two seniors on the team, averaged 77.63 strokes for eight rounds while competing in all four fall events. His best round was a 74 on the second day of the Olivet (Mich.) Comet Classic on Sept. 5.
He ranked a close second behind junior Bobby Santerre, who averaged 76.88.
"Chuck had a very solid fall season and will definitely be a key for us when we resume play this spring," B-W's second-year coach, Chris Kibler said. "This fall, Chuck played very consistent golf and was a team leader."
The son of Sally and Charles Scarbrough, Scarbrough is majoring in business administration.
Scarbrough and the Yellow Jackets will return to action this spring when they make their annual spring break trip to either Hilton Head, S.C., or Florida.
Edinboro's Nemergut second
EDINBORO, Pa. -- Julie Nemergut, a junior on the Edinboro University women's cross country team from South Range High, was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference women's cross country athlete of the week recently.
Nemergut placed second out of 268 runners in the Wisconsin-Parkside Invitational, to help Edinboro place first out of 20 teams. Nemergut covered the 5,000-kilometer course in 17:49.
Edinboro made it a sweep of the weekly awards as Ryan Coon was named the PSAC men's cross country athlete of the week. Coon placed fifth out of 369 runners over the 8,000-meter course in 25:29, to help the men place third out of 29 teams.
Area trio boosts Thiel
Three Youngstown-area volleyball players -- Stephanie Monus (Struthers High), Mary Massaro (Liberty) and Molly Klink (East Liverpool) -- have been freshman contributors to the Thiel College volleyball team.
Monus leads the team in digs per game with 4.36 through 14 matches (5-7 record, including 0-3 in the PAC). Klink is second in digs (2.94) and Massaro fifth (1.60). Klink also is third in kills per game (1.86).
Monus had six digs in Thiel's season-opening 3-0 win at Hilbert College. Klink had 13 digs and 10 assists in Thiel's 3-0 loss to Waynesburg last Thursday.
Thiel will play at Westminster Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Sopkovich aids John Carroll
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Julie Sopkovich, a graduate of Girard High, is one of the leaders for the John Carroll University women's soccer team this season.
Sopkovich had two goals and one assist through 10 games (2-8 overall, 0-2 in the OAC), to tie for the team lead in assists and tie for second in points.
Sopkovich broke two scoring droughts recently when she scored a goal in John Carroll's 3-2 double-overtime win over Case Western Reserve. Her goal was the first goal that the team scored in 14 days, and the team's first goal at home since Oct. 17 of last season.
Defensive standout
BALTIMORE, Md. -- Jimmy Sanders, a junior defensive back for the Johns Hopkins University football team from South Range High, has registered 15 tackles (six unassisted and nine assists) to rank No. 11 of the team through five games (4-1 record). He also has one forced fumble.
Last season, Sanders had 12 tackles and six pass breakups and one interception as a backup safety and special teams player for the Blue Jays. The six pass breakups ranked fourth on the team.
Also with Johns Hopkins is Lee Everett, a junior offensive lineman from South Range High.
Jen Morgan on Thiel staff
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Jen Morgan, the wife of Youngstown-native Clyde Morgan, has become an assistant coach for Thiel College women's basketball team.
Jen Morgan, a four-year player for the Thiel team who graduated in 2003, joined the staff of first-year coach Artina Trader, who recently succeeded long-time coach Gloria Pasci of Sharon.
Jen Morgan ranks No. 6 in single-season 3-point field goal percentage (38.5) on Thiel's all-time records list, and is No. 8 in career 3-point field goals (40).
Clyde Morgan, a Chaney High graduate, is coach of the Thiel men's and women's track teams and an assistant football coach.
The couple lives in Greenville and they have one son, Ziair.
