Salem topples Poland for third straight win



Canfield blanked Struthers 31-0, while Newton Falls and Girard rolled to wins.
POLAND -- A stingy defense by Salem High School helped the Quakers to a 21-7 victory over Poland Friday in a Metro Athletic Conference game in the Bulldogs' stadium
It was the third straight win for Salem (5-2, 2-1), which held the Bulldogs to 54 rushing and 84 passing yards.
Jarin Heath caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mark Kolich to give Salem the lead in the second quarter and Bryan Wright added the extra point.
Bob Endicott caught a 14-yard TD strike from Kolich in the third period and Craig Hritz tallied on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Grant Sevek was the leading rusher for Salem with 79 yards on 17 attempts. Kolich connected on 9 of 16 passes for 75 yards.

CANFIELD -- The Cardinals used a balanced attack to even its Metro Athletic Conference record at 2-2.
The Cardinals (4-2) gained 144 yards on 34 rushes as Sean Baker picked up 68 on 12 attempts. Jordan Ferns caught five passes for 136 yards, which included touchdown catches of 26, 38 and 41 yards from quarterback Jamie McNally, who hit on 7 of 11 passes for 145 yards.
Struthers (0-6, 0-4) rushed 33 times for 52 yards as Justin Penson carried 12 times for 59. The Wildcats connected on 2 of 8 passes for 40 yards.
Canfield had six sacks with defensive end Zach Guerreri getting two.

NEWTON FALLS -- Mike Peryak scored a pair of touchdowns to lead Newton Falls past Brookfield in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
The Tigers (2-5, 2-2 TAC) jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and scored 20 more in the final quarter.
George Davis also scored twice for the Tigers, including one on a 68-yard pass interception. Jeremy McCourt scored when Justin Townsend blocked a Brookfield punt and McCourt ran 13 yards for the score.
Brookfield's lone touchdown came on a 60-yard run by Ryan Martin.

GIRARD -- The Indians improved to 6-1, 3-1, while Champion fell to 0-7, 0-4. No other details were reported.
