Public hearing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County commissioners will hold a public hearing at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Green Township administration building, 12184 Lisbon Road, Greenford. They will accept public input on the proposed annexation of 57.5 acres from Green Township to the city of Salem. The property is along state Route 14 just west of Salem, across from Wal-Mart. A developer plans to build a Home Depot store there. If the annexation is approved, the property would remain in Mahoning County but would become a part of Salem.
School groundbreaking
AUSTINTOWN -- A public groundbreaking ceremony for the new middle school is set to be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the site of the new building on South Raccoon Road.
Flood benefit
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Superior Carr Wash, 2271 E. Western Reserve Road, will have a carwash next weekend to benefit flood victims in Columbiana County.
Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Poland is seeking pledges on a per-vehicle basis. People who make a pledge will get a free carwash.
The amount raised will depend on how many vehicles are washed from 8 a.m. Oct. 16 to 5 p.m. Oct. 17. The rain dates for the event are Oct. 23-24.
Take down signs
McDONALD -- Village officials are reminding residents that a local ordinance prohibits signs of any kind, including political signs, to be placed in the devil strip area. Officials are asking those who put signs there to remove them. The ordinance states anyone in violation could be cited and fined up to $100.
Safety programs
HOWLAND -- The township fire house on Niles-Cortland Road will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today for a variety of safety programs.
Activities will include child safety seat inspection, bicycle rodeo and helmet distribution and displays of fire department equipment. There will also be refreshments and door prizes.
Garbage collection
WARREN -- Garbage collection in the city will not be disrupted by Columbus Day on Monday, officials say. Residents are asked to put trash out on the regularly scheduled day.
hComposite of attacker
AUSTINTOWN -- Township police have released a composite drawing of a man who sexually assaulted two teenage girls at gunpoint in a field near Fitch High School.
The man is described by the teens as in his 20s or 30s, between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. He's white with a stocky build and brown hair that's cut into a short, spiked style. The assault took place the evening of Sept. 30. Anyone with information is asked to contact township police.
New bridge finished
BRACEVILLE -- Newton Falls-Braceville Robinson Road re-opened over Eagle Creek on Friday. The road was closed between McConnell East and Shihola roads since Aug. 6 to allow workers from Ohio Bridge Corp., of Cambridge, to replace a bridge. The $300,000 project was completed with local and state Issue 2 funds, officials said.
Held until hearing
CAMPBELL -- Daniel Reyes, 32, of 119 Columbus Ave., is being held on $20,000 bond pending his appearance in municipal court Nov. 26 for a pretrial hearing on domestic violence and child endangerment charges.
According to a police report, Reyes was arrested at his home Thursday afternoon after repeatedly punching his 26-year-old girlfriend in the face while she was holding her 3-month-old baby. The woman suffered a cut on her forehead and was treated at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
The report says the baby and inside of the house were spattered with blood.
