BOXING Legends banquet Oct. 17 in Warren
Five inductees and Greg Richardson are the special guests.
WARREN -- The Trumbull County and Area Boxers' Legends of Leather Club will hold their 18th Annual Shirl "Jack" Thompson Hall of Fame Banquet Oct. 17 at Aulizio's Banquet Center.
This year four inductees will be added to the list, including one posthumously. The guest speaker will be James "Jimmie" Haynes and the special guest will be Greg Richardson.
The Man of the Year is Phil Rogers, a 2002 inductee. Rogers retired with an amateur record (40-14-1) and captured the Pittsburgh Diamond Belt title, and the Seebees Company C title. He was runner-up in several other boxing tournaments.
Anthony "Tony" DePrim won the 1942 Youngstown Golden Gloves and the previous year he was runner-up to George "Sonny" Horne. Fighting throughout the area, he fought such notables as Warren's John Zakosky and Niles' Mike Birskovich.
Bobbie Giachetti won three different amateur titles and was runner-up in several. He was also a Olympic trial runner-up. Giachetti trained local fighters for Don King and trained tough Warren's Frankie Randall. Giachetti is Vice President of the Ohio State Former Boxers Association and is a solid supporter of the Legends of Leather.
Marsh
Nick Marsh won the Warren Novice title and fought such outstanding boxers like Tommy DeSantis, Jim Fittipaldo and many others. He started at 85 pounds and worked his way to the 112 pound weight class. He also trained fighters as well.
Joseph "Juggie" Sanfrey is another member of the fighting Sanfrey family that entered the fight game. He had over 10 boxing bouts and fought one of Warren's best Danny Raeburn. He was trained and managed by noted Warren boxer-trainer Shirl "Jack" Thompson.
Guest speaker James Haynes was the winner of the 1956 Cleveland Golden Glove Champion and was also a quarter-finalist in the 1956 Olympic Trials in New Jersey. He combined a 25-6-0 record. He is very active in civic affairs and is also the treasurer of the Ohio State Former Boxers Association.
Special guest Greg Richardson, a five-time champion will be the guest of the banquet. Called "The baddest little man in the world," he was one of the area's best boxers in many years. Greg compiled an excellent amateur and professional record during his lengthy career.
There will also be 14 award recipients for their contribution to the Legends of Leather and the fight game.

Each year, the Legends of Leather dedicates their banquet to one of the area's outstanding boxers over the years. This year it is dedicated to Joseph "Red" D'Amato, the 1944 Boston AAU Champion. D'Amato won the prestigious title under the direction of legend Shirl "Jack" Thompson.
