Teen dies in car crash
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 17-year-old New Castle boy was killed when the car he was driving Thursday morning left Plain Grove Road in Plain Grove Township and hit a sign and two trees. His 17-year-old female passenger remained in critical condition in UPMC Pittsburgh this morning.
David Michael Tomon Jr., of East Lutton Street, died in the one-car accident. Flown by helicopter to the Pittsburgh hospital was Amber J. Shoaff of West Drive Road, Volant.
The car was southbound on Plain Grove Road when it left the road near Rodgers Road at 7:50 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police said. Lawrence County Coroner Russell Noga pronounced Tomon dead at the scene of severe injuries to the head and chest.
Attempted murder charge
SALEM -- A Salem man was bound over to the Columbiana County grand jury on a charge of attempted murder after a hearing Thursday in Northwest Municipal Court.
Aaron Catlin, 29, of South Union Avenue, is accused of striking Marc Finley, 21, of Andrew Avenue with his car Sept. 30.
A second man who was struck, Frank E. Gardner, 24, of Aetna Street, died after being taking to Akron City Hospital. No charges have been filed in his death.
Police said the men were injured after a fight at a nearby bar.
2 charged in gun theft
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Two people are accused of taking six expensive, mint-condition firearms from a Perry Township home and selling them to an area gun shop. Pennsylvania State Police said James Howard Swayne Jr, 27, of Harmony, Pa., and Renee Michelle Burnworth, 27, of Ellwood City, Pa., are each charged with theft, theft by deception, criminal conspiracy and receiving stolen property. Both were arrested Thursday on a warrant.
Police said they entered a the home of a 51-year-old Perry Township woman June 1 and took six firearms valued at $3,500. They sold the weapons at an area gun shop within two weeks for $1,000. Both are in Lawrence County jail after failing to pay $10,000 bond each.
Guilty of felonious assault
LISBON -- A Columbiana County Common Pleas Court jury found Matt Marcum, 61, of Beeson Mill Road, Leetonia, guilty of a charge of felonious assault.
The jury reached its verdict Wednesday. Marcum is to be sentenced later.
Marcum was accused of shooting at his wife, then 31, and her son, then 4, as they fled their home in a van Sept. 14, 2003. She told Leetonia police that Marcum fired shots into the van she was driving. No one was injured.
The Columbiana County Special Response Team found Marcum sleeping at the home with a gun and two full clips of ammunition on a table near the bed.
Man injured in accident
SALEM -- A 19-year-old Salem man was flown to the MetroHealth System in Cleveland at 1:39 a.m. today after a traffic accident on Georgetown Road.
Nicholas Schnader, 19, of Allen Drive, was driving east on Hartley Road but failed to stop at the intersection with Georgetown. He lost control of his vehicle and hit a pole, according to the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The nursing supervisor's office, public relations and human resources departments were unable to provide information on Schnader's condition.
Safety equipment grant
SHARON, Pa. -- The city has been awarded a $1,000 grant from Penn PRIME Municipal Insurance Trust to buy safety equipment. The money will be used for barricades, cones, crosswalk tape and a paint spray machine. Penn PRIME is a nonprofit municipal insurance trust offering comprehensive insurance coverage alternatives to traditional insurance markets.
Mexican citizen indicted
PITTSBURGH -- A Mexican citizen found in Mercer County has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge re-entering the country. The one-count indictment named Jesus Santillan Paniagua, 40, of Micohoacan, Mexico.
According to the indictment, on Aug. 8, Santillan Paniagua was found in Mercer County after having unlawfully re-entered the United States after deportation. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Santillan Paniagua is in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody.
Free move at library
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana Public Library, 332 N. Middle St., will have a free movie matinee at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the library's Salchow Room. There will be refreshments and door prizes.
