SECTIONAL TENNIS TOURNEY Tom, Brocker, Ezzo, Scudere score wins

The four winners advanced to the Division II semifinals.
BOARDMAN -- Poland High's Alyssa Tom defeated top-seeded Jill Martin of West Branch, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4, in a Division II sectional quarterfinal tennis match Thursday at Boardman High School.
Second-seeded Becca Brocker of Mooney defeated Rebekka Hom of Salem, 6-2, 6-0; third-seeded Kim Ezzo of Ursuline, the defending sectional champion, beat Megan Knopf of Crestwood, 6-2, 6-1, and April Scudere of Brookfield turned away No. 4 seed Samantha Stanich of Poland, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
The four advanced to the semifinals at 9 a.m. Saturday. Championship and consolation matches will follow. The four have already qualified for district competition at Canton next week.
Division I
CANTON -- Canfield's top-seeded doubles team of Rachel McGowan and Renee Lesnett won three matches Thursday to advance to Saturday's semifinals in the Div. I sectional doubles tournament at Stadium Park.
McGowan and Lesnett, who both qualified for last year's state tournament as singles players, defeated Marlington's Rachel Reed and Alyssa Duvell, 6-0, 6-2, then beat Canton McKinley's Meredith Parks and Mary Kaminski, 6-4, 6-0.
Canfield then beat Boardman's top doubles team of Brooke Katzman and Katie Yazvac, 6-1, 6-0.
McGowan and Lesnett already have qualified for next week's district tournament at Tri-City Park in Rocky River. They will meet Massillon Jackson's Stacy Conlan and Caitlin Klausner -- the fourth-seeded doubles team -- at 9 a.m. Saturday at Weis Park.
Canfield's Dana Griesmer won all three of her singles matches at Weis Park to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. She will meet second-seeded Lanna Buehler of Wooster, one of eight remaining singles players, for a berth in the district tournament.
Canfield's Jillian Nard won two matches before falling in the third round. She was the only other area player to make it out of the second round.

Solon sectional
SOLON -- Howland's Stephanie Gula won two matches, then lost her third to just miss advancing to the district tournament at Thursday's Div. I sectional at Solon High School.
Gula defeated Cuyahoga Falls' Katie Berry, 6-0, 6-1, then beat Brecksville's Megan Foster, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the third round. Revere's Stephanie Danesis, the third-seeded player, defeated Gula, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the final four.
No other area singles player made it out of the second round. No area doubles team advanced past the first round.
