Video games and life
What began as a doctoral dissertation has steadily ballooned into a multibillion-dollar industry. Video games have become a regular fixture in the daily lives of teens and adults across America. PBS' The Video Game Revolution Web site (www.pbs.org/kcts/videogamerevolution/index.html) examines the history of this phenomena and the debate over its influence on young people. Whether you're a casual player or a hard-core gamer, this site will entertain as well as educate.
The Video Game Revolution's interactive timeline presents an overview of the genre's history stretching back to 1952. It's intriguing to see how video gaming has evolved over the decades and seeing its more memorable moments (like how a beta version of the online-multiplayer shooting game "Doom" crashed a university's entire mainframe in 1993 and how the U.S. Army employed the game "America's Army" as a recruitment tool in 2002).
The Video Game Revolution also looks at the impact gaming has on society. The site's "Personal Gaming Stories" has video testimonials of people sharing how video games have affected their lives, for better and for worse.
