AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY Trumbull and Mahoning rank high for their relays

Warren and Boardman had the first and second largest relays in Ohio.
CANFIELD -- Trumbull and Mahoning County American Cancer Society Relays for Life ranked first and seventh nationally in 2004 for per-capita income in their respective population brackets.
The two counties raised $901,225 and $556,192 respectively.
Additionally, the Warren and Boardman Relays for Life were the largest and second largest single site relays in Ohio for the 10th year in a row, ACS officials said.
Five Trumbull County relays -- Cortland, $108,559; Liberty, $122,645; Lordstown, $13,593; Niles, $135,194; Warren, $521,234 -- generated $4.0514 per each of the county's 222,449 residents. That total ranked tops nationally among 123 counties in its population group of 150,000 to 249,999, said Al Stabilito, Eastern Ohio director of communications for ACS.
"The dedication put forth shows they are very giving and caring people," said Jay Bice, president of the Trumbull County ACS.
Mahoning County
The five Mahoning County relays -- Austintown, $106,410; Boardman, $339,591; Campbell, $17,531; Sebring, $47,600; Youngstown State University, $45,060 -- ranked seventh in per capita income out of 140 counties in the country with populations of 250,000 to 499,999. Mahoning County has a population of 253,223 and the per capita income generated was $2.1964 per person, Stabilito said.
"It's another outstanding achievement for the people in our area," said Deb Dashko, president of the Mahoning County ACS.
Both Trumbull and Mahoning counties had relay income increases over last year. In 2003, Trumbull County relays netted $869,350, while the 2003 Mahoning County relays raised $500,700.
In addition to being the top individual relay in Ohio, Warren's event was the 17th largest single site relay in the United States out of 4,011 relays, and Boardman's relay was 61st, officials said.
