PREP SOCCER Poland clinches MAC title; Badger girls are crowned
The Fitch, Ursuline, Howland and Canfield girls teams won.
NILES -- The Poland High boys soccer team completed an undefeated season in the Metro Athletic Conference with an 11-2 win over Niles Wednesday.
The Bulldogs finished 9-0-1 in the MAC and are 12-0-2 overall.
Stephen Gavolas scored three goals for Poland while Chris Juchno scored two.
Dain Malaniak, Matt Shurilla, Max Pearce, Jon Bezilla, Alex Hunt and Michael Kennedy all scored one goal. P.J. Booth had five assists and Jon Bezilla had one.
The Bulldogs, who outshot Niles 21-9, set a school record for goals in a season (67).
Niles' goals were scored by Nathan Mang.
Howland 6, Alliance 1
HOWLAND -- On Senior Night, Malik Mohammad scored four goals in the first half to lead Howland (8-4-1, 6-2-1 MAC).
Matt Shaw, Zack Byler and Mark Burley had assists.
Mark Hammond scored for Howland on an assist by Ian Jones, and Micke Maiorano scored for Howland with about three minutes remaining in the game.
Alliance goalie Chad Swisher made seven saves and Matt Paidas scored the Aviators' goal.
Champion 8, East Liverpool 0
EAST LIVERPOOL -- John Emery scored five goals for Champion and has 36 goals this year -- a school record -- for the Flashes (10-0-4).
Chris Palm scored twice, Brett Sulonen scored a goal and Max Brugler had five assists.
Liberty 5, LaBrae 3
LEAVITTSBURG -- Brian Ceehon had three goals for Liberty while Tim Kelly and Ron Hunkus had one each.
Max Alper made 11 saves for Liberty.
Girls
ANDOVER -- Badger won its second straight Northeastern Athletic Conference championship with a 7-2 victory over Pymatuning Valley.
The Braves are 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the NAC.
Tessa Bonar scored four goals for Badger while Cayla Arnold, Hannah Miller and Shannon Sudon all had one.
Miller had two assists, and Bonar, Arnold, Sudon, Lauren Hall and Alivia Nuzzo all had one.
Tracie Gruskiewiez and Tanya Lazarevic scored goals for Pymatuning Valley (3-8-2, 1-5).
Fitch 7, Canton GlenOak 2
CANTON -- Jodi Bowlen, Brittney Getz and Dina Harris each scored two goals for the Falcons in a Federal League game.
Teresa Camens added the other goal for the Falcons (8-3-3, 5-1). Bowlen had two assists and Erica Bortman had one.
Lindsey Kracker scored a goal and an assists, while Erin Carpenter got the other goal for GlenOak (4-7-3, 1-5).
Fitch 24 shots on goal and GlenOak had 11.
Cara Calai made four saves for Fitch and Courtney McBride made 13 for GlenOak.
Ursuline 5, Warren Harding 1
WARREN -- Mariah Snyder, Hannah Snyder, Katelyn Tondo-Steele, Mandie Laneue and Elizabeth Emanuel scored goals for Ursuline (7-5-1, 3-3 Steel Valley Conference).
Hannah Snyder, Geralyn Tondo-Steele, Katelyn Tondo-Steele and Emanuel each had one assist while Jolanta Carkido made seven saves.
For Warren Harding (4-10, 1-3), Lafaye Lilly scored the goal and Stephanie Cross made 10 saves.
Howland 3, Salem 0
HOWLAND -- Erin Gilmour, Kaylin Hovance and Rachel Albani scored a goal apiece for the Tigers (9-0-2), who captured the Metro Athletic Conference title with an 8-0 record.
Gilmour, Deja Amato and Annastacia Filippidis had an assist apiece.
Howland had 24 shots on goal and Salem (5-6-1, 2-5) five.
Melissa Airhart made three saves for Howland and Abi Sequin made 16 for Salem.
Canfield 5, Alliance 0
ALLIANCE -- Melanie Seiser and Audra Frimpong each scored two goals for the Cardinals (7-6-1, 4-3). Tia Norris added the other goal.
Noel Fox had two assists for the Cardinals and Emily Sulenski, Nikki Sorice and Norris each had one.
Canfield had 41 shots on goal and Alliance had five.
Aviators goalkeeper Stacie Weimer made 28 saves and Megan Garland of the Cardinals made four.
Poland 4, Niles 1
POLAND -- Sarah Anderson scored two goals for Poland (8-3-1, 5-3 MAC), while Stephanie Armstrong and Maureen Malone had one each.
Sam Stanich made four saves.
For Niles (6-3-3, 4-3-1), Jessica Pallante scored on a penalty kick and Kelly Mikesell made 10 saves.
Champion 2, Akron SVSM 0
CHAMPION -- Carlie Dawson and Eliza Slama scored for the Golden Flashes (7-3-4).
Champion had eight shots on goals and St. Vincent-St. Mary (8-6-1) had 11.
The Golden Flashes' Jessica Wood made nine saves. Michelle Zrebiec made five saves for the Irish.

ALLIANCE -- Ashley Kurena scored the Warriors' goal.
