Infidels show, albums on the way
A Beatles compilation CD, featuring The Infidels and other indie bands, is on its way.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Alternative rock band The Infidels will play only one hometown concert in 2004, but there's more in store in terms of records.
The live show will be at 10 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Lounge, 23 N. Hazel St., downtown. Opening act will be The Glorystompers, featuring Infidels founding member Tony Mentzer. He was lead vocalist from 1982 to 1985.
The Infidels' lineup Saturday will consist of guitarists Pete Drivere and David Lisko, drummer John Koury and bass player John Hlumyk. Chris Leonardi, a founder of the band Slack Jaw, will join them on keyboards.
New album
Work continues on a new Infidels album of original songs as well as a Beatles compilation, featuring The Infidels and eight other acts applying their styles to songs from the vast Beatles catalog. One participant is Harrisburg, Pa., band The Jellybricks, featuring Boardman native and former Infidels guitarist Larry Kennedy.
The Beatles CD will be released in December or January, Lisko said. Copies will be distributed by participating bands either for free or at a low cost, since the purpose is to call attention to the talent of these groups by using the familiar material of The Beatles, he added.
Origins
The Infidels date to 1982, when Hlumyk and Drivere started a punk rock band in West Middlesex, Pa., and played for the first time at Cedar Lounge. The Infidels found a mentor in Frank Secich, who was a founding member of Blue Ash and bass player with the Dead Boys, featuring the late Stiv Bators of Girard.
The Infidels played everywhere from high school auditoriums to New York nightclubs and, in 1986, went on tour with The Dead Boys. It received heavy radio play for its song "Mad About the Girl," which earned it regional recognition as well as capacity crowds at Cedar Lounge.
The mesh of 1960s-era melody and 1970s punk energy also gained The Infidels fan bases in Europe and Australia.
Koury and Lisko left the band in 1991, but Drivere kept The Infidels going until 1995. Lisko and Drivere re-formed the band in 2000.
