Iowa running back Lewis lost for season

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Just as coach Kirk Ferentz had feared, Iowa running back Jermelle Lewis will be lost for the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Lewis was hurt in the second quarter of Iowa's 38-16 victory over Michigan State last Saturday, becoming the third Hawkeyes' running back lost this season with an ACL tear. He'll have surgery later this month.
"Losing Jermelle is extremely disappointing for all of us," Ferentz said Tuesday. "He hasn't had a lot of luck during his college career."
Lewis, (5-11, 215) from Bloomfield, Conn., sat out his first year at Iowa for academic reasons and missed half of last season while recovering from an ACL tear in his left knee. He's Iowa's leading rusher with 200 yards in 57 carries.
Running backs Marcus Schnoor and Albert Young were lost with ACL tears earlier this season. The Hawkeyes, who don't play this week, also have been hit by injuries at several other positions.
"Hopefully some of our players will get healthy over the week off," Ferentz said. "But there are quite of few of them that aren't. I think we've had 10 surgeries already this season. It's just one of those tough situations."
The Hawkeyes are 3-2 overall this season and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Their next game is Oct. 16 at home against Ohio State.
