NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Police Chief Carmen Piccirillo had good news for New Wilmington Borough Council members when they met this week.
He said Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews told him that next year the state plans to pave the portion of Pa. Route 208 that is in the borough. He added it is likely the state will also approve flashing 15-mile-per-hour school zone lights and signs for the highway.
Piccirillo said he is working on paperwork to submit to PennDOT's signal division to put flashing school zone lights and signs on Route 208 at Wood Street, which is a school crossing. He said that such lights are not usually approved unless the school actually faces a state highway. But he said PennDOT officials have indicated they are likely to approve them for the location because of the heavy student pedestrian traffic on Route 208. However, the borough will have to pay for the lights if they are approved.
