HUBBARD -- Two retail businesses plan to build in the community, Mayor Arthur U. Magee told city council Monday night.
The mayor said that Family Video will build a store at West Liberty and Stewart streets. Family Video has 400 stores nationwide and expects to open 100 more within a year.
Nine houses will be razed to make way for the video store, Magee said.
Walgreens drugstore plans to build at South Main and East Liberty streets. Magee said three structures will be razed, including the old S.A. Barnes store.
The mayor had no timetable for construction.
Magee also said that the parking area just east of the post office on East Liberty has been blocked to motorists who use the post office.
He said lot owner Vince Fonds wants to sell the property. However, Magee said Fonds told him that when would-be buyers look at his property, the parked vehicles detract from the value.
The lot is used by post office customers. Magee noted that there is space to park behind the post office or at police headquarters.
Storm sewer upgrades
In another matter, council asked for legislation that would award the storm sewer upgrade on Saul and Hillview drives to Utility Contracting Inc., Youngstown, which bid $128,800 to do the work.
The work is designed to eliminate storm water backup into homes during heavy rains.
Utility Contracting was the lowest bid of five bidders. CTC Excavating Inc. of Boardman was the highest bidder at $170,653.
Council also asked that legislation be prepared to award VEC Systems Inc. a $129,557 for roofing work on the city administration building. The roof leaks.
VEC was the lowest of three bids with Conti Corp. being the highest at $141,815.
Lawmakers will hold a work session at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13 to discuss the projects.
Bridge opens
During the meeting, service director Albert Patrick announced the West Water Street bridge opened to traffic Monday after being replaced.
The bridge was supposed to open Sept. 25 but was delayed because water and sewer lines were not properly marked on maps.
The East Park Avenue bridge remains unfinished. It was supposed to reopen Aug. 25 after replacement but won't open until Oct. 15.
