HUBBARD -- A 17-year-old Hubbard High School girl will be charged this week, accused of having a loaded pistol on school property.
Sgt. James Taafe said today that the student will be charged in Trumbull County Family Court with illegal conveyance of a deadly weapon on school property.
Schools Superintendent Richard Buchenic said the girl has been suspended. After an investigation, a decision will either continue the suspension or she'll be expelled..
There are other penalties, Buchenic said, including taking her driver's license.
Zero tolerance
Buchenic said the school administration has a zero tolerance policy concerning weapons and considers the student's activity as a "serious offense."
Taffe said school officials found out last Tuesday about the gun.
Police were called to the school in the late morning and found a loaded .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol in the car, which was parked in the school lot. The vehicle, owned by her parents, is a family car the girl drives to school, Taafe explained.
Taafe said she told him she took her father's gun for protection when she visited friends at housing projects in Youngstown.
"She's definitely getting charged," Taafe said.
The sergeant said that because of quick action by school officials, the firearm never made it into the school.
He said despite rumors, there were no knives or drugs found in the car, which was turned over to her father.
