HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER Poland clinches MAC title with 11th victory
Led by Stephen Gavolas, Poland won the title without three injured starters.
CANFIELD -- Junior Stephen Gavolas scored two goals and senior P.J. Booth hit another to lead the Poland High boys soccer team to a 3-1 win over Canfield on Monday.
The victory gave the Bulldogs (11-0-2, 8-0-1) their first Metro Athletic Conference soccer title since 1996.
Poland played the match without three senior starters who were out with injuries -- Lenny Liguore, Michael Hallock and Isaac Yurco.
Poland out-shot Canfield 12-3.
Canfield goalie Andrew Turocy had nine saves.
Salem 8, Niles 4
SALEM -- The Quakers (8-3-1, 5-2-1 MAC) got four goals by Dominic Gilbey, two by Keith Getzinger and one goal each by Hank Loudon and Drew Matak.
Tomas Lebiedzik and Fred Vogel each recorded two assists for Salem, while Aimon Scullion and Loudon added one each. Goalkeepers Justice Pash and Ryan Yeager combined for five saves.
For Niles, Nathan Mang scored three goals and Ted Sloban had one.
Lordstown 1, Mathews 0
VIENNA -- Lordstown's Nate Rech scored the game's only goal with about 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
Brandon Wickline had seven saves for Lordstown, which out-shot Mathews 26-10.
Brett Ford had 22 saves for Mathews (2-7-1).
Bristol 2, Liberty 1
LIBERTY -- Ron Hunkus scored in the first half for the Leopards.

BOARDMAN -- Champion's Carlie Dawson scored the game's only goal midway through the second half on an assist by Jessica Bennett as the Flashes topped Boardman 1-0.
Jessica Wood had 14 saves for Champion (6-3-4).
Lani Vlad had eight saves for Boardman (5-7).
Ursuline 8, Newton Falls 0
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mariah Snyder had five goals and an assist and Katelyn Tondo-Steele added three assists for Ursuline, which scored seven goals in the second half.
Geralyn Tondo-Steele, Hannah Snyder and Mandie Laneue also scored for the Irish (6-5-1).
Mariah Snyder, Hannah Snyder and Geralyn Tondo-Steele added assists. Jolanta Carkido had two saves.
Grace Spletzer had 12 saves and Jessica Moser had two for Newton Falls (5-6-3).
Howland 3, Poland 1
HOWLAND -- Erin Gilmour had two goals and Allie Airhart had one for Howland in a Metro Athletic Conference game.
Annastacia Filippidis added two assists and Deja Amato had one for the Tigers (8-0-2, 7-0-0). Melissa Airhart had six saves.
Sarah Anderson scored for Poland (7-3-1, 4-3-0) on an assist by Colleen Moran. Samantha Stanich had 16 saves.
Struthers 2, Newton Falls 1
STRUTHERS -- Dayna Yash and Breanne Rhorman each scored a goal and each had an assist for the Wildcats (4-5-2).
Aubry Coffee scored the Newton Falls goal.
Maplewood 4, Liberty 1
LIBERTY -- Kelsie Sommers, Kristina Peterson, Leah Dean and Tori Spencer each scored a goal for the Rockets (4-7-2).
Kristi Sehon scored for the Leopards, who trailed 2-1 at the break.
Badger 2, Girard 0
GIRARD -- Jenna Miller scored twice and Tessa Bonar had both assists for Badger, which led 1-0 at halftime.
Hayley Jenkins had 16 saves for Badger and Ashley Esposito had 13 for Girard.
