KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Jason Campbell threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, and eighth-ranked Auburn stamped itself as national title contenders by overwhelming No. 10 Tennessee 34-10 on Saturday night.
Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown each ran for a touchdown to complement Campbell, and the Tigers' swarming defense made Tennessee's two freshmen quarterbacks look like neophytes for the first time this season. Junior Rosegreen had four interceptions to set a record for Auburn (5-0, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) and tie the SEC mark.
Erick Ainge got his first start for the Volunteers (3-1, 1-1) after racking up the best passer rating in the SEC over the first three games. The promotion did no good. He threw four interceptions and lost a fumble. Fellow freshman Brent Schaeffer had little success in his first game as a reliever. He also threw an interception.
No. 3 Georgia 45, No. 13 LSU 16
ATHENS, Ga. -- David Greene set a school record by throwing five touchdown passes and Georgia got a huge victory in the Southeastern Conference.
It was a totally unexpected performance by Georgia (4-0, 2-0 SEC), which has never been an offensive juggernaut during Mark Richt's four years as coach. The Tigers (3-2, 1-2) had not given up this many points since a 56-13 loss to Florida in 1996.
No. 4 Miami 27, Georgia Tech 3
ATLANTA -- Brock Berlin threw three touchdown passes, and Frank Gore ran for 115 yards in Miami's first Atlantic Coast Conference road game.
Playing without the injured P.J. Daniels, the ACC's leading rusher, Georgia Tech (2-2, 1-2) was shut down by Miami's tough defense, which forced four turnovers. Miami (4-0, 2-0) has allowed only one offensive touchdown in four games.
Berlin completed 10 of 20 passes for 200 yards with no interceptions.
No. 5 Texas 44, Baylor 14
AUSTIN, Texas -- Cedric Benson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns, and Vince Young passed for two scores for Texas.
Benson passed Earl Campbell for second place on the school career rushing list, and Young threw his first scoring passes to a wide receiver, both going to Tony Jeffery in the first half.
While rain and an early start kept many fans away from Royal-Memorial Stadium, the Longhorns (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) made quick work of the Bears (2-2, 0-1) in their final tuneup before next Saturday's matchup with No. 2 Oklahoma in Dallas.
No. 9 Florida St. 38, N. Carolina 16
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Wyatt Sexton threw three touchdown passes in his starting debut, and Leon Washington ran for 153 yards and a touchdown for Florida State.
Florida State (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 24-6 lead early in the third quarter, but didn't put the game out of reach until Sexton's 15-yard TD pass to Chauncey Stovall completed the scoring with 6:53 left.
No. 10 California 49, Oregon St. 7
CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Chase Lyman had five catches for a career-high 176 yards and three touchdowns, and Aaron Rodgers completed 12 of 16 passes for 140 yards and three scores for California (3-0, 1-0 Pac-10).
Cal had not played for 20 days. A game against Southern Mississippi, originally scheduled for Sept. 16, was postponed by Hurricane Ivan.
The Beavers dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-10.
Louisiana Tech 28, No. 17 Fresno St. 21
RUSTON, La. -- Ryan Moats scored his fourth touchdown with less than 3:20 left and finished with in 236 yards rushing for Louisiana Tech (3-2, 2-0 Western Athletic).
Moats, who entered as the nation's fifth-leading rusher, scored from 8 yards, helping Tech beat a ranked team for the second time in school history.
Fresno State (3-1, 0-1) led 21-20 with four minutes left and was trying to run out the clock. But Byron Santiago intercepted Paul Pinegar's pass and returned it to the 16. Moats scored two plays later, and Matt Kubik hit Eric Newman for the 2-point conversion.
No. 22 Louisville 59, E. Carolina 7
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Eric Shelton tied a Louisville record with five rushing touchdowns and finished with 129 yards for Louisville.
Louisville (4-0, 2-0 Conference USA) piled up 549 yards overall on the nation's second-worst defense and reached 40 points for the seventh time in 17 games under second-year coach Bobby Petrino.
The Cardinals forced five turnovers and converted three into touchdowns in their last tuneup before an Oct. 14 date with fourth-ranked Miami. The Pirates (0-4, 0-1) have lost nine straight games and 17 of their last 18.
No. 25 Oklahoma St. 36, Iowa St. 7
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Vernand Morency ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns and Jason Ricks kicked three field goals for Oklahoma State.
Jamie Thompson caused two fumbles and recovered another for Oklahoma State (4-0, 1-0 Big 12). The Cowboys, who led 23-0 at halftime, held the Cyclones (2-2, 0-1) to just 59 yards rushing on 37 carries.
