Mount Union 49, Capital 7
COLUMBUS -- Zac Bruney ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Mount Union, extending the Purple Raiders' streaks to 98 regular-season and 88 Ohio Conference victories in a row. Bruney rushed for 48 yards on eight carries, scoring on runs of 1 and 7 yards, and also completed 12 of 22 passes for 161 yards and a 64-yard touchdown to Scott Casto. Casto added a 1-yard touchdown run for the Purple Raiders (4-0, 3-0). Capital (3-1, 2-1), which came into the game unbeaten, was ranked No. 4 in the nation. The game drew a record crowd of 3,649 at the Crusaders' Bernlohr Stadium. Mount Union rushed 51 times for 368 yards while holding Capital to 2 net yards on 31 attempts. Quarterback Rocky Pentello was sacked seven times for 69 yards in losses. Aaron Robinson gained 137 yards on 11 carries for the Purple Raiders, scoring on a 1-yard run. The Purple Raiders, ranked No. 1 in the nation, have won seven national championships since 1993. Their last regular-season and OAC loss was 24-10 to Baldwin-Wallace on Oct. 15, 1994.
Walsh 27, Malone 17
NORTH CANTON -- Chase Hostetler rushed for 159 yards and scored three times to lead Walsh, giving the Cavaliers their sixth consecutive win over their cross-town rivals. Malone (2-2, 0-1 Mid-States Football Association Mideast League) built a 10-0 lead on Jeremy Rininger's 33-yard field goal and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Brad Reifsnyder to Nyrell Knight. Walsh (4-1, 2-0) scored the next 27 points, with Hostetler scoring on runs of 2, 3 and 3 yards. In addition, Rayshaun Kizer returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown. The Cavaliers' defense sacked Reifsnyder five times and intercepted three of his passes. Reifsnyder finished 26 of 43 for 326 yards and the one touchdown pass.
Washington & amp; Jefferson 34, Thiel 10
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Chris Edwards threw two touchdown passes to lead the Washington & amp; Jefferson attack. Edwards, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 72 yards, connected with Jacob Shields on a 9-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. He also threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Jon Miller in the second quarter, as the Presidents built a 28-10 lead by halftime. Washington & amp; Jefferson (5-0, 1-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference), No. 14 in the NCAA Division III rankings, also scored on an 8-yard return of a fumble recovery by Andy Shook, a 1-yard run by R.J. Zitzelberger and a 1-yard run by Ryan Mendel. Thiel (3-2, 1-1) scored on a 28-yard field goal by Paul Stibach and on a 19-yard pass from Darrell Satterfield to Dan Haskins. Satterfield completed 28 of 52 passes for 272 yards, but was intercepted three times. Haskins caught 10 passes for 81 yards.
Wooster 35, Allegheny 13
WOOSTER -- Tony Sutton rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries and returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score, leading Wooster to the decision. Sutton had a 10-yard TD run in the second quarter and ran back the second-half kickoff, giving the Scots (4-0, 1-0 North Coast Conference) a 14-0 lead. After the Gators (1-3, 0-1) pulled within seven on Mario Tarquinio's 9-yard touchdown run, Justin Schafer threw a 33-yard TD pass to Richie McNally and Sutton scored on a 1-yard run to push the Scots' lead to 28-7. Tarquinio rushed 14 times for 117 yards, but Allegheny did little else on offense. Five other players managed just 3 yards rushing on 21 carries, and Jimmy Savage only completed 11 of 24 passes for 79 yards with an interception. Schafer finished 8-of-21 for 93 yards with an interception. He also had a 2-yard touchdown run.
Grove City 63, Bethany 6
BETHANY, W.Va. -- Grove City piled up 416 rushing yards and returned two interceptions for touchdowns. It was Grove City's eighth consecutive victory over the Bison (0-4, 0-2 Presidents' Athletic Conference). The Wolverines (3-2, 1-0) returned interceptions for touchdowns of 100 yards and 42 yards, had touchdown runs of 80, 45 and 21 yards, and touchdown passes of 46 and 34 yards. The Wolverines had 499 yards of total offense, 416 of them on the ground, while forcing six turnovers. The Wolverines broke it open in the third quarter, scoring four touchdowns during the first seven minutes of the second half. The first two scores came just 28 seconds apart.
California (Pa.) 34, Slippery Rock 31
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Antoine Bagwell scored an 8-yard touchdown with 3:50 remaining to wipe out a 31-27 Slippery Rock lead. Cal (4-1, 1-1) took a 24-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Rock (3-3, 1-1) then ran off a 31-3 spurt. Bagwell ran 31 times for 278 yards. Josh Kniess ran 26 times for 74 yards and Nate Crookshank was 12-for-34 for 225 yards passing for the Rock.
Earlham 40, Hiram 0
RICHMOND, Ind. -- Justin Rummel ran for two touchdowns and passed for another. Rummel put Earlham (1-3, 1-0 NCC) on the board early in the first quarter, connecting with Derrick Parkevich for a 6-yard touchdown pass and then scampering into the end zone on a 2-yard TD run with 9:13 left. Maurice Hibbler scored again with another 2-yard run less than two minutes later to give the Quakers a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Rummel scored again on a 3-yard run near the end of the first half to give Earlham a 28-0 halftime lead over Hiram (0-3, 0-1).
Baldwin-Wallace 14, Muskingum 7
BEREA -- Brandon Hedges ran for a career-best 166 yards and the deciding touchdown to lead Baldwin-Wallace. Hedges' 5-yard scoring run came midway through the third period to give B-W (4-0, 3-0 Ohio Conference) a 14-0 lead. Moments later, after a punt by the Muskies (0-3, 0-2), Muskingum's Brandon Clum picked up a fumble and raced 62 yards to cut the Yellow Jackets' lead in half. The Baldwin-Wallace defense then took over, not allowing the Muskies to get past midfield on their final five possessions. Brian Pickens caught a 1-yard pass from Mike DiAngelo for the first Yellow Jackets touchdown. Dave Ehrman caught two passes for B-W, setting team and conference records with at least one reception in his 36th consecutive game. He broke the mark set by Lance Yandell, who played for B-W from 1990-93.
Kenyon 39, Oberlin 30
GAMBIER -- Alby Coombs rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns to ignite Kenyon. Nick Stalick completed 21 of 38 passes with two touchdowns and one interception for the Lords (1-3, 1-0 North Coast Conference). Rafael Sanchez caught five passes for 108 yards and a score. The Yeomen (0-4, 0-1) got 97 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Travis Oman. Ryan Squatrito was 15-of-27 for 280 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Oberlin closed to 32-30 when Oman scored on a 6-yard run with 6:45 remaining, but Kenyon pushed its lead to nine on Coombs' 23-yard TD run with 3:25 to play. Kenyon took the lead for good at 26-21 on Coombs' 2-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds left in the second quarter. The Lords went ahead 32-24 when Coombs scored on a 3-yard run with 7:25 remaining.
