Sevek's two TDs help Salem stun Howland in MAC



HOWLAND -- In one of the season's biggest upsets, the Salem High football team stunned unbeaten Howland 29-13 Friday in a Metro Athletic Conference game in the Tigers' stadium.
The Quakers (4-2, 2-1) trailed 13-7 at halftime before scoring 22 unanswered points to prevail.
Lance Smith, who rushed for 121 yards on 26 carries, put the Tigers (5-1, 2-1) ahead when he tallied a 9-yard touchdown in the first quarter.
Right back came Salem as Grant Sevek scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 34-yard run.
Nick Lyon plunged in from a yard to give Howland its halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Sevek, who gained 105 yards on 21 rushes, scored on a 2-yard run. When Mark Kolich caught a pass from Tom Jesko for extra points, the Quakers were ahead to stay.
Jarin Heath caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Sevek in the fourth quarter and the Quakers' Tyler Pierce returned an intercepted pass 100 yards to seal the win.
Alliance 54,Struthers 14
ALLIANCE -- Steve Love scored on touchdown runs of 67, 1 and 7 yards to lead the first-place Aviators (4-2, 3-1). Love finished with 191 yards on 16 carries.
Chris Bivens rushed for 67 yards on six carries, including touchdown runs of 21, 9 and 33 yards.
For the Wildcats (1-5, 0-2), Justin scored on runs of 76 and 56 yards. He rushed for 167 yards on 10 carries.
Niles 14, Canfield 12
NILES -- Niles (2-4, 1-1) scored all its points in the first half, then held off the Cardinals (3-6, 0-2), who tallied 12 points in the third quarter.
Steve Datcha returned an intercepted pass 65 yards to give the Red Dragons a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and Ted Slovan made a place kick for a 7-0 lead.
Jared Sears tallied on a 7-yard run and Slovan's place kick made it 14-0.
Canfield's Jamie McNally scored on a 29-yard run and Jordan Ferns caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from McNally in the third period.
