Oct. 9: 9:30 a.m. Dog Hike. Bring along your dog as we explore the trails surrounding Ford Nature Center. Dogs must be nonaggressive, under the handler's control, and leashed (8 ft. maximum) at all times. One dog per handler. Meet at Ford Nature Center. Easy rating, one mile.
Oct. 9: 1:30-4 p.m. Kayaking as the Color Begins. Late-blooming wildflowers and early-changing leaves should create colorful conditions for this Newport Wetlands excursion. Ode Aduma, club member of Trumbull Canoe Trails, will be the guest leader. Kayakers of all skill levels are welcome. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Minors 11-15 years old must share a tandem kayak with an adult; 16- and 17-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult. Participants will be required to complete a waiver. The magical costume competition begins at 7 p.m. with a new category, Dress Your Pet. Owners will escort their costumed pet across the Morley stage. At 7:15 p.m., costumed children of all ages will get their moment in the spotlight as they compete for prizes. Special animal guests and free candy for children. Oct. 30: 10 a.m. "The Last American Man." Is Eustace Conway the last American man? Read Elizabeth Gilbert's narrative about Conway and the 20-plus years he has spent making his home in the Appalachian Mountains and living off the land. MetroParks Farm: The animal barns will close for the season Oct. 22 and will reopen in the spring.
Hours through Oct. 22: 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. The public can visit with the farm animals. Group tours by appointment.
1-5 p.m. Sundays. Bring your family to visit with the animals and enjoy a tractor-wagon ride around the Farm. Wagons leave every half-hour.
