MiniPage Teacher's Guide
MiniPage activities meet many state and national educational standards. This week's standards: Students understand the characteristics and life cycles of organisms. (Science: Life Science) Students understand the interactions of animals and their environments. (Science: Life Science)
Activities:
1. Make a "Cats!" poster using words and pictures from the newspaper. Pick words and pictures that show cats and the different things cats like.
2. Look in the sports pages and the automobile ads for cat names. Make a list of the names you find. Why do you think these cat names are so popular?
3. Write a paragraph nominating cats for a Great Hunter of the Year award. Include information that shows why cats make good hunters.
4. Create a Venn diagram comparing big cats and small cats. Draw two overlapping circles. In one circle, write the characteristics of big cats. In the other circle, write the characteristics of small cats. In the overlapping center section, write the characteristics that are shared by big and small cats.
5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about one of these big cats: jaguar, lion, tiger or leopard. Use these questions to guide your research: Where would you find this cat in the wild? How large does the cat grow? How does it hunt and catch its prey? What are the cat's enemies? How many are living on the Earth?
