Group sets cleanups for river



Shenango River Watchers will hold its final river cleanups of the year Saturday and Oct. 23. Saturday's event will begin in the Sharon City Centre parking lot at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided, and anyone registering by Wednesday will get a free T-shirt. To register, call (724) 342-5453. The Oct. 23 event will be a tire recycling day for the Greenville/Reynolds area. That event will also begin at 9 a.m., but a site has yet to be selected. Those wishing to help can call the same registration number and they will be contacted when a site is elected.
Wet weather
The trend of damp weather in the Shenango Valley continued during September. The Shenango Valley Division of Aqua Pennsylvania Inc. reported that precipitation for the month totaled 5.12 inches, well above the average of 4.16 inches for that month. The total precipitation for the first nine months of the year reached 35.67 inches. The average for that time period is 31.66 inches. Total precipitation for 2003 reached 50.67 inches, well above the average 40.64 inches.
Rides for seniors
State Rep. Chris Sainato announced that Allied Coordinated Transportation System, a shared-ride program in Lawrence County, has been awarded an $88,500 transportation grant by the state Department of Transportation to improve public transportation for older Pennsylvanians in the region.
Register to vote
Monday is the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 2 election. This includes new registrations and change of address, party and name. Lawrence County Voter Registration and Elections office hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mailed registrations must be postmarked by Monday. Forms are available at all local post offices, township and borough buildings. The last day to apply for an absentee ballot is Oct. 26, and all voted ballots must be returned by Oct. 29.
